The Novas are proud to celebrate a major milestone for one of our alumni. Former Nova and standout goaltender Colten Ellis (2013–2015) will make his first NHL start tonight with the Buffalo Sabres as they face off against the Detroit Red Wings.

Colten, who grew up in River Denys, Nova Scotia, was a key part of The Novas during his U15 Major seasons before moving on to a successful junior career with the Cape Breton West Islanders, the Rimouski Océanic, and the Charlottetown Islanders. He was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the 3rd Round (93rd overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft and joined the Buffalo Sabres organization in 2025.

Known for his calm presence and athletic ability between the pipes, Ellis has continued to impress at every level of the game. Tonight marks the next step in a journey built on hard work, dedication, and perseverance.

Game Day is Here! The Novas Open Their Season Tonight!

It’s finally here — The Novas’ 2025–26 season officially gets underway tonight with the home opener against the Bedford Bandits! Puck drop is set for 5:00 PM at the Antigonish Arena, and the team is ready to kick things off in front of the hometown crowd.

After weeks of hard work and preparation, The Novas are eager to hit the ice and set the tone for the season. Fans can expect fast-paced action, strong defensive play, and the kind of intensity that makes U15 Major hockey such an exciting brand of the game.

Come early, wear your Nova colours, and bring the noise — the boys are ready, and they want the building rocking from the first shift to the final buzzer.

As the 2025-2026 season approaches, preparations are well underway for another exciting year of Nova U15 Major Hockey. One of the first steps in that process is our annual fall tryout camp.

We would like to remind players and families that our fall tryouts are by invitation only.

Earlier this year, during our Spring Identification Camp, we selected 25 players for our protected list. These players, along with a small number of additional invitees, will receive direct invitations to attend our fall tryout sessions. Only those individuals will be permitted to participate.

We understand that many young athletes are eager for an opportunity to showcase their skills, and we are grateful for the continued interest in our program. However, due to league guidelines and our commitment to providing a focused, high-level development environment, we are not able to offer open tryouts beyond our protected and invited players.

If you have questions about the process, we encourage you to review the NSU15MHL guidelines or reach out for clarification. We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue building a competitive and character-driven team for the upcoming season.

The Novas Volunteer at the Special Olympics Nova Scotia Summer Games

The Novas were proud to take part in a truly inspiring day at the 2025 Special Olympics Nova Scotia Summer Games.

Coaches, staff, and nine of our returning players spent the day volunteering at the Games, assisting with a wide range of events and activities. It was an experience none of us will soon forget.

From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was filled with energy, pride, and inclusion. Our young athletes rose to the occasion — embracing their roles with maturity, treating every Special Olympian with respect, and engaging wholeheartedly in every task. Over the course of ten hours, we watched these young men grow before our eyes — learning lessons that go far beyond the rink.

It was a powerful reminder of the role sport plays in bringing people together and creating opportunities for connection, growth, and community.

We are grateful to the organizers of Special Olympics Nova Scotia for welcoming us into such a meaningful event. And we are incredibly proud of our players for the way they carried themselves throughout the day.

Representing The Novas at the Special Olympics Nova Scotia Summer Games

Last night, members of The Novas represented our team and the Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League as VIP guests at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2025 Special Olympics Nova Scotia Summer Games.

It was an exciting, inspiring, and truly eye-opening evening as we joined athletes, families, volunteers, and supporters from across the province to help kick off this remarkable event. The energy in the room was electric, and the passion and determination of the Special Olympics athletes was nothing short of incredible.

At The Novas, we believe strongly in giving back to our community and standing alongside organizations that celebrate inclusion, perseverance, and the power of sport to bring people together. It was an honour to be part of such a meaningful night and to support these amazing athletes as they begin their competitions.

We wish all participants the best of luck and congratulate Special Olympics Nova Scotia on hosting such a powerful and uplifting event!

In Loving Memory – Matthew LeBlanc
2010 – 2025

It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Matthew LeBlanc, who was named an Honorary Member of The Novas U15 Major Hockey Team during the 2019–2020 season as part of the Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League’s Wear It For Wishes campaign in partnership with the Children’s Wish Foundation.

Matthew was more than a guest — he was a true teammate. With his courage, warmth, and infectious smile, he brought energy and perspective to our team in a way we will never forget. He proudly dropped the puck at our Wear It For Wishes game, and from that moment on, he held a permanent place in our hearts.

Matthew passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, surrounded by family. While his time with us was far too short, his impact was immeasurable.

On behalf of The Novas family — past and present — we send our heartfelt condolences to Matthew’s loved ones. We will forever remember him as part of our team.

The Novas are thrilled to share some incredible news—former Nova Brady Peddle has been selected in the 3rd Round, 91st Overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft!

Brady’s development as a player and person has been remarkable to watch. After his time with The Novas, he continued to elevate his game at the highest levels of junior hockey, including a standout run in the USHL with the Waterloo Black Hawks. His dedication, work ethic, and elite skill have now earned him the ultimate recognition—an NHL Draft selection.

Everyone in The Novas organization is proud to have played a small part in Brady’s hockey journey. We know this is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting professional career.

The Novas proudly congratulate Antigonish native and former player Jacob Hudson on being named Rookie of the Year by the ECHL’s Maine Mariners!

Hudson made an immediate impact in his first professional season, recording 15 goals and 23 assists for 38 points over 61 games — placing him third in team scoring.

Before turning pro, Hudson showcased his talent with the Moncton Wildcats in the QMJHL, where he led the team in scoring during the 2020–21 season with 32 points in 22 games. He continued his development at St. Francis Xavier University, representing the X-Men in U Sports competition.

Jacob’s journey from local standout to professional hockey player is a testament to his dedication and skill. The Novas organization and the local hockey community are incredibly proud of his achievements.

The Novas are proud to celebrate the achievements of two former players, Riley Sampson and Jack Hayne, who both played for the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) during their championship season.

This year, the Wildcats captured the President’s Cup, awarded to the QMJHL playoff champions. It’s one of the most prestigious trophies in Canadian junior hockey and a testament to the team’s resilience and dominance throughout the postseason.

Riley Sampson and Jack Hayne contributed to the Wildcats’ historic run, helping push Moncton to national recognition. As QMJHL champions, the team earned a spot in the 2025 Memorial Cup, Canada’s national major junior championship, where they faced off against the best teams from the WHL, OHL, and host Rimouski Oceanic.

Although the journey ended short of lifting the Memorial Cup, Riley and Jack’s success this season places them among the top players in the country at the junior level. The Memorial Cup is the ultimate stage for CHL players, and being part of it is a major career milestone.

Everyone at The Novas organization is incredibly proud of Riley and Jack’s development and accomplishments. From suiting up in Nova Scotia to performing on the national stage, they continue to inspire our current group of players.

The Novas are proud to recognize the tremendous accomplishments of alumnus Brady Peddle, who recently helped lead the Waterloo Black Hawks to the Clark Cup Finals in the United States Hockey League (USHL). Although the Black Hawks fell just short in a thrilling five-game series, losing 4-3 in the final to the Muskegon Lumberjacks, Peddle’s performance was nothing short of outstanding.

The USHL is the top Tier I junior hockey league in the United States and is widely regarded as one of the premier development leagues for NCAA and NHL prospects. The Clark Cup is awarded annually to the USHL playoff champion, making it one of the most prestigious trophies in North American junior hockey.

During the Black Hawks’ playoff run, Peddle stood out as one of the most reliable and impactful defensemen in the league. Logging major minutes in all situations, he combined defensive responsibility with offensive instincts, contributing consistently at both ends of the ice.

Brady had previously committed to play NCAA Division I hockey for Michigan State University, a member of the prestigious Big Ten Conference. The Spartans have a long and storied hockey tradition, and Brady’s addition adds strength to a growing program with national ambitions.

Brady’s development over the years, from his time with The Novas to making waves in the USHL and now advancing to NCAA hockey, is a testament to his work ethic, talent, and determination. Everyone in The Novas organization is incredibly proud of his journey and looks forward to watching him take the next step in East Lansing.

In accordance with the regulations of The Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League, twenty-five hockey players from the region have been identified and placed on The Nova's 25-Player Protected List following our Spring Identification Camp. Those twenty-five players are listed below. Those players not included on our 25-Player Protected List will be issued a NSU15MHL Player Release form in the next few days and become eligible to be invited to the tryouts for any team in the Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League.

In Memory of Billy Joe MacLean

The Novas organization wishes to acknowledge the passing of Billy Joe MacLean, a key figure in the formation of our hockey team and a well-known public figure in our region.

Though he has not been involved with the team in recent years, Billy Joe played an instrumental role in helping our area secure a franchise in what would become the Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League. His early support and efforts were vital in establishing a foundation for what The Novas have become today.

We extend our condolences to the MacLean family and honour Billy Joe’s role in our history.

NSU15MHL October Player of The Month

Lucas Chisholm, a defenseman from Heatherton, Nova Scotia, has emerged as a key leader for our team this season. As one of only three returning players, Lucas was recently named captain, a testament to his dedication and influence both on and off the ice. He plays a crucial role as the quarterback of our power play and is the go-to defenseman in all key situations. Despite a challenging start to the season, Lucas's commitment to his team's growth and his steady presence have been instrumental in guiding our younger players through their development journey.

Antigonish – Today, the Organizing Committee responsible for the Nova Scotia U15 Hockey Major Hockey League Provincial Championships is pleased to announce Love Me Fish & Lobster as the title sponsor for the upcoming championships hosted by the Novas in Antigonish, April 4-7.

Billed as ‘The annual showcase for Nova Scotia’s future hockey stars’, the quality and speed of play attracts talent scouts representing semi-professional, and even professional teams. And deservedly so: many of these highly skilled players will advance to play in the highest divisions of competitive hockey within the Canadian Hockey League (including the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)), NCAA, U Sports, even Canada’s National Teams and the NHL.

About the Novas

The Nova Major Team (Novas) is now into its 14th year of operation. The organization was created with the mission to provide 13–15-year-old players in Northeastern Nova Scotia the ability to develop and play the game of hockey at an elite level without having to leave their home regions—Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, Richmond, and parts of Victoria Counties.
The Novas last won the U15 provincial championships in 2015 and went on to win the Irving Oil Atlantic Challenge Cup that same year. Incredibly, 17 former Novas went on to lead the Cape Breton West Islanders to winning the 2017 Telus Cup, the Canadian Major Midget Championship title.

This past weekend in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, forward Lex Watt tied a Nova record by scoring 5 goals in one game against the Western Hurricanes. This accomplishment has only been obtained three times in the past by a Nova, once by former Captain Matthew Ellis in 2017 and twice by former Captain Tyler Peddle in 2019. Congratulations Lex!

The entire Nation will be watching today when former Nova Rhyah Stewart and her teammates begin their quest for the 2024 U18 Women's World Championship!

The Novas are thrilled to announce that Colby Fleet, Duncan Anderson, Hunter MacDonald, and Leo Forance have been selected to play in the prestigious 2023 Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League Showcase Game in Cole Harbour on December 28th! This annual event highlights the top second-year Under 15 players in the NSU15MHL, giving them a chance to shine in front of Under 18, Preparatory School, and Junior Scouts.

In a nail-biting showdown last night, the Novas faced off against the Special Olympics Nova Scotia Eastern Highlanders in a heated floor hockey game. The match proved to be a hard-fought battle, with both teams showcasing their skills and determination. Despite the Novas' valiant efforts, the Eastern Highlanders emerged victorious with a final score of 20-18. The event not only highlighted the competitive spirit within the teams but also celebrated inclusivity and the joy of sports. Negotiations have already started for a rematch!

The NS U15 Major October’s Player of The Month is Goaltender Leo Forance from the Nova`s. Leo is statistically leading the League in all goaltending categories; in 3 games, he has 2 shutouts and has only allowed 1 goal with a 0.983 save percentage. Leo, who hails from Inverness, is a second year U15 player, who was an affiliate with The Novas last season. He came to camp this year with a strong work ethic and a determination to make the team. His commitment to improving and developing is certainly reflected in his play so far this year.

In accordance with Section 8.2 Team Tryouts: Fall Camp of the Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League Operations Handbook - A core roster of 13 skaters and 1 goaltender is to be submitted to the League Registrar by September 24th. For players not signed or not on the team protected list by September 24th, should the player request a release, it must be provided immediately or the player must be signed. The Nova U15 Major Hockey Team 2023-2024 Training Camp (Stage II)

In accordance with the regulations of The Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League, twenty-two (22) hockey players from Stage I of training camp have been selected to advance to Stage II. Those twenty-two (22) players are listed below:

The Novas Fall Training Camp for the 2023-2024 Hockey Season will open on Tuesday, September 12th. Training Camp is open to only those players on the team's 25-player protected list posted from Spring ID Camp and those players that have received an invitation to attend camp. All invitations have been currently issued.

Stage I of Fall Training Camp will take place between September 12th - September 17th. At the conclusion of Stage I the roster will be reduced to 22 players.

Nova Captains Angus Hughie MacLean & Thomas MacEachern took time for a visit with Special Olympian Hannah Deon and her parents, Gloria & Joe while they were selling Nova 50/50 tickets this past Sunday during the game against The Bandits. This season The Novas, with the help of Special Olympic athletes and their families, are donating all proceeds from their 50/50 draws throughout the season to Special Olympics Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League recently handed out their major awards during the opening ceremonies of their Provincial Championship Tournament being held this weekend in Truro. Second year Nova blue-liner Brady Peddle was named to the 2021-2022 NSU15MHL 1st Team All-Stars!

On January 31, 2022 Gail Stewart, 46, was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), an uncommon type of cancer that requires a stem cell infusion, which injects healthy stem cells from a donor. The Stewart Family has been an integral part of The Nova Hockey program since its inception in 2010 and Gail is the ultimate Hockey Mom. Three of her children have been members of The Nova’s. Gail, along with her loving family, her husband Dave and children, Zac (2017-2018), Leyton (2018-2020), Rhyah (2020-2021), and Meryk, are urgently seeking a hero -- a matching stem cell donor to help save Gail's life.

During this Day of Remembrance, The Novas once again participated in the annual Oliver Smith Legacy Game held each November 11th in the afternoon after the completion of The Official Remembrance Day Ceremonies. The game is held each year to honour Oliver Smith, remember his legacy, continue to help raise awareness about Ewing's Sarcoma, and as a fundraiser for The Ewings Cancer Foundation of Canada . Oliver's legendary Ollie Bots have helped and continue to help raise awareness about the disease, a rare form of bone cancer that took his young life. A number of The Novas were teammates of Oliver's throughout their minor hockey careers and consider it an an honour to participate each year in his memory.

Congratulations to the ten former Novas that were selected in the 2021 MHL Entry Draft that was held this weekend!

A record number of Novas have been selected by teams in this year's QMJHL Entry Draft. All were members of the 2019-2020 NSMBHL League Championship team.

Congratulations to former Nova Captain Tyler Peddle who has been selected second over all by The Drummondville Voltigeurs in the 2021 QMJHL Entry Draft. Tyler is still undecided if he will play Major Junior Hockey or NCAA Hockey but The Novas will be following him wherever he decides to play!

Nova U-15 Major Hockey Team President Shane MacIsaac announced today that Andrew Boyle is joining the team’s coaching staff for the 2021-2022 hockey season.

The 22-year-old native of Afton, Nova Scotia, played his minor hockey in Antigonish before playing the 2013-2014 season with the Novas, two seasons with The Cape Breton West Islanders, and then the past five seasons with The Antigonish Junior ‘B’ Bulldogs; serving as the team’s Captain from 2019-2021.

Andrew is currently entering his first year in the Education Program at Saint Francis Xavier University after graduating with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Kinetics this past spring.

Andrew has become a very recognizable volunteer in the Antigonish Community as a member of the local Challenger Baseball Program for the last four years and a member of The Saint Francis Xavier University MAX Program. In both programs, he assists individuals with disabilities in baseball, skating, para-sledge hockey, swimming, and other activities. He was recently named The Hockey Canada Champion for November 2020 by Hockey Canada for his community involvement.

“We are very excited to add Andrew to our program,” Nova head coach Jamie Mattie said in a statement. “He has been very successful throughout his playing career and brings a ton of energy and enthusiasm to our staff. Our young hockey players will be in great hands, and we feel that Andrew can help our players to continue to develop both on and off the ice.”

This was certainly a hockey season for the ages…however, we can all be glad that The Nova’s were able to complete their entire shortened season when most of the country was not permitted to be on the ice. The Novas would like to thank all the players and coaches for their dedication to the team and to the game over the past season; it was the most trying in the history of Nova hockey. This team might have been on the ice more than any team in the nation this past season but their work ethic and drive to improve did not wilt as a team or as individuals. It reflects the character of the team, the players, and the coaches...and the dedicated parents who got them to this point in their hockey careers. The Novas would like to wish all our graduating players success in their future endeavors whether on or off the ice and hopefully someday when they are reminiscing, their hockey experiences this year will overshadow all the other challenges we faced this season.

Due to the increased ferocity of the COVID-19 variants this past spring and the Nova Scotia Health Authority’s regulations imposed to prevent the spread of the pandemic throughout the Province, we were unable to celebrate an awards night for our players for the second season in a row. The following 2020-2021 Major Award winners were recently announced during a scheduled social media event.

Former Nova and member of the 2014-2015 Atlantic Champions, Stephen Fox has been named the 2020-2021 Maritime Junior Hockey League Player of The Year. Stephen finished of his junior career with The Amherst Ramblers while finishing second in The MHL in league scoring with 28 goals and 31 assists in 34 games played.

Former Nova (2013-2015) and current goaltender with The Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL, Colten Ellis recently signed his NHL Entry-Level contract with The St. Louis Blues. Former Nova (2013-2014) and current captain of the Antigonish AA Munro Bulldogs Junior B hockey team, Andrew Boyle, was named Hockey Canada Champion for November. As a Hockey Canada Champion, Andrew receives a Hockey Canada jersey, Scotiabank prize pack and is featured in a video that outlined his involvement in the game and community. (Hockey Canada Video)

Andrew, a fourth-year student at St. F.X., has been involved with the local Challenger Baseball program for the past four years and is also a member of the St. F.X. MAX program. In both programs, he assists individuals with disabilities in baseball, skating, para-sledge hockey, swimming, and other activities.

 The Nova Major Hockey Team have announced the dates for their upcoming 2020-2021 Training Camp & Tryouts for the upcoming season.  Training camp is open to all Bantam-aged players for the 2020-2021 hockey season that are members of the Antigonish Minor Hockey Association, Strait Area Minor Hockey Association or the Cape Breton West Minor Hockey Association. The Novas are in the process of planning for the upcoming 2020-2021 Hockey Season in accordance with the requirements set forth by the Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League, Hockey Nova Scotia, Hockey Canada, The Government of Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Health Authority. We are moving forward with the scheduling of dates for tryouts, games and tournaments but everything is very tentative due to the current pandemic. We ask all U-15 age hockey players for the 2020-2021 hockey season that are interested in trying out for The Novas to complete the registration form (Link Below) to receive direct communication from The Novas as our plans and schedule for the upcoming season develop.
