The Novas

Novas Off To A Great Start

The Nova Major Bantams opened the 2014-15 Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League season this past weekend with a home and an away game.  At the Antigonish Arena on Saturday evening, the Nova Bantams faced off in their home opener against against the Newbridge Academy Senators, following a heartfelt tribute and a moment of silence for John “Nova” Chisholm, the naming sponsor of the club, who passed away during the past summer.  The Novas and the Senators battled throughout a scoreless first period until Logan Timmons got the home team on the board on a beautiful set up from Liam MacKinnon and Fearghus MacDonald.  The Senators took advantage of some Nova miscues in the neutral zone and evened the score soon afterwards, and the game remained knotted at 1 until Stephen Fox put the Novas ahead early in the third with the assist going to Jack Morris.  The game see-sawed throughout the remainder of the third when Logan Chisholm salted the victory with an empty net marker that made it across the line with a second to spare, much to the delight of the boisterous Arena crowd.  On Sunday afternoon at the Pictou County wellness Centre, the Novas grabbed an early 1-0 lead and went on to defeat the Crushers 5-0.  Logan Timmons had a three point game with 2 goals and a helper; Logan Chisholm, Jacob Stewart, and Stephen Fox each had a goal with the remaining helper coming off the stick Chase Ellis.   Colten Ellis put in solid efforts in both games to pick up his first two victories of the young season.  “This weekend was about coming together as a team,” said the Novas new head coach Kyle MacDonald.  “It’s a new season, with a lot of rookies, and some great second year players that can really lead this squad.  As with the beginning of every season, we made a few mental miscues mistakes and learned how to play a little better as a team.”  MacDonald says he favours the high tempo, entertaining style of hockey that was in abundance at the arena on Saturday afternoon. Team President Shane MacIsaac was delighted with the number of fans who showed up to watch the game at the arena .  “This really is showcase hockey for this age group - it’s fast, intense, and the players are skilled,” MacIsaac offered. “It’s great to see the league is growing its fan-base.  We have a lot of games at the Antigonish Arena this year, and I hope we will be able to see even more fans coming out to watch this league.  It really is great hockey”.  The Novas see action this weekend with a pair of home games: Saturday evening they face off against the Truro Bearcats at 5 PM at the Antigonish Arena, while on Sunday at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre, the Novas take on the Halifax ACCEL Hawks at 11 AM.
