Western Hurricanes

Halloween Weekend â?¦Monster Win

The BMO Western Hurricanes came to play hockey once again as most of us anticipated the sugar rush to follow Sunday night.

It would be the Hurricanes first look at this Newbridge squad that has arguably been off to a good start this season with some key wins. Still the Hurricanes players are hard to impress and although the first 12 minutes would find the Hurricanes killing off two penalties they would strike first with Morgan Messenger (Benight) firing in the only goal of the first.

In the second period Josh Shatford (M Messenger, Jollimore) added a power play goal in what is proving to be a very successful specialty team component of the Hurricanes offence. Capping off the second with a bit of a back breaker goal Morgan Messenger (Benight) tickled the twine with only 9 seconds remaining just going to show you have to play to the buzzer.

The third saw the Hurricanes continue working the boards and providing what has been some dominating third period play. Keegan Cooke put the game out of reach early by adding to the tally with just 2 minutes gone by in the third. Peterson in nets needed to only come up with a couple key saves to take away what little life the Senators could muster in a tough weekend schedule for them.

But sometimes things can come back to haunt you and with only 26 seconds remaining three greedy Hurricane ghouls got caught anticipating a neutral zone puck race for a possible attempt at a fifth goal only to see the Senators defensemen make a great play to keep the puck in at the line and create a scoring chance. That shot made the hair stand on the back of your neck as you had to witness the puck ever so slowly slip over the line to spoil the shut out.  Well ...enough said.

Even with a shorter bench and a little sickness thrown in for some pre Halloween effect the Hurricanes effort is hard to match and the 4-1 win was never in doubt outshooting their opponents 42-17.

With the news circulating about proper nutrition earlier in the week, Catherine Tufts the ultimate team player still provided a little team building by handing out some bagged goodies “after the game” just to keep things in perspective “after all it is still Halloween” . Hope you had a happy one!
