To grant a child their wish costs approximately $10,000 and the league has taken on the challenge to grant a child their wish this year. This an opportunity for the league to give back to the less fortunate children.

The league will make a check presentation to the Foundation at their annual golf tournament in June of 2017.

The Western Hurricanes look forward to having their turn hosting this game. All door proceeds and 50/50 ticket sales will be donated. Also there will be a Lobster Raffle going on as well. Hurricanes Make Final Four at Provincials

The top four teams from the NSMBHL regular season all qualified for the semi finals following the preliminary round of play at the 2014 NSMBHL provincial championship.  This guaranteed a battle to see who would get the top prize.

Before getting to the semi finals, the Hurricanes had 3 wins and one loss in the preliminary round with a 3 -2 win over Nova Jr. Xmen, a 2 - 0 win over Cole Harbour, a 3 - 1 win over Dartmouth and a 1 - 0 loss against Bedford giving the Hurricanes the 2nd seed for the playoff round and facing the third seed Bay Gulls.  Meanwhile top seed Bedford faced off against Cape Breton as fourth seed.

In the first semi final, Bedford defeated Cape Breton 4 - 2 to advance to the championship final.  The Hurricanes and Bay Gulls battled hard in their semi final and were knotted at a 3 - 3 tie until with just over 1 minute left in regulation when the Gulls scored the winner to take a 4 -3 win.

In the bronze medal game against Cape Breton, again another hard battle was on display.  Regulation time could not determine a winner as the score was tied at 3 -3.  However, at about the 8 minute mark of overtime, Cape Breton scored the winner to defeat the Hurricanes.  Bay Gulls went on to defeat the Bedford squad in the championship game 3 -2 in overtime.

Congratulations to the Bay Gulls team on the win and best of luck representing Nova Scotia and the NSMBHL at the Atlantic Championships in early April.

Depsite the loss in the semi final and bronze medal game, the entire Hurricanes organization is very proud of its players who had a highly succesful season of winning and carrying on the tradition of Hurricanes Hockey.  With a silver medal won at Esso Atlantic Challenge Cup and the Memorial Tournament along with an overall season record of 40 wins, 12 loses and 8 ties for the entire season.  Not to mention the laughs, fun and life long friendships that were created.

Silver Medal Earned at Memorial Major Bantam Tournament

With hard work and solid two way hockey, the BMO Western Hurricanes won a silver medal at the Memorial Major Bantam Hockey Tournament in Pictou County this past weekend.

The Hurricanes were able to clinch their division following a 7 - 2 win over the Valley Wildcats, a 2 - 2 tie with Nova Jr. Xmen and a 4 - 1 win over the Pictou County Crushers.  The results vaulted the team into the semi finals.

The semi finals saw the Hurricanes team face an excellent league leading Bedford Barons squad.  The game was intense and fast paced from the onset and at the end of three periods, both teams were tied at two goals apiece.  On the first shift of the overtime frame, your Hurricanes scored to win the game 3 - 2.

With only two hours to rest, it was onto the Championship game against the Cape Breton Cougars.  This was a rematch of the Esso Atlantic Cup championship game earlier in the season.  Like many other matches over the years between these two teams, the game was guaranteed to be fast and furious.  Both teams did not dissapoint.  Players from both teams gave all they had bringing the game into double overtime and three on three play until the Cape Breton team ended it and won 3 - 2.  Congratulations to an excellent Cape Breton team.

Congratulations Hurricanes on another great showing and good preperation for the start of the NSMBHL playoffs.  Your Hurricanes will face the Newbridge Academy Senators in a best two out of three series beginning on March 1st in East Hants.  Game # 2  will be at Queens Place on Saturday, March 8th at 6:15 PM and game # 3, if neccessary will be on Sunday, March 9th at 11:00 AM.  The winner will earn a berth in the NSMBHL Provincial Championship in North Sydney from March 13th - 16th.

Hurricanes Wrap Up Regular Season in Style

With two home games to wrap up the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League regular season, a solid effort leading into the annual Pictou County Memorial Tournament next weekend and playoffs later in the month was on the agenda.

On Saturday evening, a defensive game and solid goaltending was on full display as both teams worked to the final buzzer without a single goal being scored.  Parker Rowter earned the shutout in a rare 0 - 0 tie against the Halifax Hawks.

On Sunday morning, Hurricane shooters decided that the hunger around the net was not adequate and they showed some fire as they potted 8 goals on route to an 8 - 3 victory over the visiting Nova Jr. Xmen squad.

With the regular season now in the record books, the attention turns to the playoffs and earning a berth into the NSMBHL Provincial Championships.  The intensity and detail is sure to rise in all activities as the playoffs approach.

The hockey operations management and executive of the Hurricanes would like to congratulate the players and coaching staff on a great regular season highlighted by 21 wins, 5 loses and 7 ties in the 33 game NSMBHL schedule and a silver medal in the Esso Atlantic Challenge Cup.  One fantastic stat to note is that your Hurricanes great defensive efforts by the entire line up and excellent goaltending resulted in the lowest goals allowed in the NSMBHL.  Only 57 goals allowed in 33 games.  Great job guys !

Final Two Home Regular Season Games This Weekend - All Invited

The BMO Western Hurricanes had a loss and tie this past weekend against two very good hockey clubs.  As always when they face Cape Breton, a good close hockey game is on display.  On Saturday, despite having a 2- 0 lead with just over 10 minutes to go, Hurricanes could not hold onto that lead and the Cape Breton squad earned a 4 - 2 victory scoring 4 straight goals (one empty net) in the thrid period.

Dissapointed by the collapse late in the game, the Hurricanes had little time to think about it as they hit the road to face the second place Bay Gulls.  Again, the Hurricanes played a solid end to end game and had a 2 - 1 lead until a Bay Gulls shooter tied it up with just over a minute left.  The game ended in a 2 - 2 tie.  Two very good top ranked teams battling to the end.

Only two more regular season games remain on the schedule and the Hurricanes just happen to be at home this weekend wrapping up the 2013 - 2014 NSMBHL regular season.

Saturday evening, February 8th at 6:15 PM they host the Halifax Hawks.  On Sunday morning, February 9th they face the Nova Jr. XMen at 11:00 AM.  Come out to cheer the team on before the playoffs and watch some great NSMBHL action.  Both games at Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool.

Hurricanes Continue to Play Solid Hockey the Past Two Weeks

Following the holiday break, Hurricane players hit the ice for two NSMBHL home games.  On Jaunuary 4th, a great effort by the entire line up resulted in a 4 - 1 win over the Cole Harbour Eastern Shore Storm.  The following day, a real battle was on display as the always tough Dartmouth Major Bantam Whalers squad were in town.  When the dust settled, a hard fought 4 - 3 win was in the books for the Hurricanes.

Last weekend brought the first annual Major Bantam East Coast Ice Jam tournament in Halifax.  Twenty two teams began the quest for the title.  In the preliminary round, game #1 brought a 1 - 1 tie against the Bedford Barons.  In game #2 despite outshooting the speedy Moncton Hawks, the team fell 3 -1.  In game # 3, a highly skilled Riviere du Loup, Quebec team came at the Hurricanes, but the Hurricanes were not to be denied as they earned a 3 - 1 victory.  With the preliminary round success, the team was onto the round of 16.  In that round, a 6 - 2 win over the Truro Bearcats pushed the team to Saturday evenings quarterfinals.  Unfortunately that was the end of the road in this tournament as the Nova Jr. Xmen defeated the Hurricanes 4 - 0.  The guys battled hard in every game and outshot their opponents in all games and showed a lot of team unity.

This weekend, it's back on the road for some NSMBHL regular season action as they head to Berwick on Saturday to play the Valley Wildcats and then go to Bedford on Sunday to face the Bedford Barons.

Hurricanes Battle Their Way to a Silver Medal at Esso Atlantic Cup

To get through to the championship game of the prestigious Esso Atlantic Major Bantam Tournament requires a group of players committed to approach the task as young professionals, knowing that success will bring a hard grind of 7 games over 4 days.  The Hurricanes program knows all too well what it takes having won two of the last three Esso Atlantic Championship tournaments.  All season, this year’s edition of the Hurricanes have been surprising people outside of the organization with their play, however, within the family, it’s known that they are up to the tasks and capable of great things.

On Thursday, twenty of the top major bantam hockey teams in Atlantic Canada met in Halifax for the start of the tournament with a slew of preliminary games at rinks throughout Halifax.

The Hurricanes opened up game # 1 with a match up with the Pictou County Crushers.  The Hurricanes threw a ton of pucks at Pictou goaltender on route to a 4 – 1 win to start off the tournament.  Connor Barnhill was named player of the game.  With only two hours until the next game, a quick rest and recovery saw the team play extremely hard and dig deep for a 5 – 1 victory over a very good Summerside Capitals team.  Ian MacPhee was named player of the game.  After day one, two wins.

Day #2 brought on the always tough Cape Breton Cougars squad who were also undefeated up to this point.  A complete team effort by every player on both ends of the ice resulted in a big 4 – 0 shutout victory over the Cape Breton squad.  Parke Rowter earned the shutout.  Walter Flower was named player of the game.

Day # 3 had the Hurricanes is a good position to qualify for the quarter finals based on the past three games but still needed to win some points against the Fredericton Canadiens who were fighting for their playoff lives.  This game was a battle with the Canadiens tenacious play.  The Hurricanes were resilient and fought hard to a 3 – 2 win.  Matt Sabean was named player of the game.

With the preliminary round completed by all teams by early afternoon on Day # 3, now it was time for the tournament organizers to do the math on what top 8 teams qualified for the quarterfinals.  When that was all done, Hurricanes were ranked 3rd overall only half a point from first overall.

Onto the quarterfinals with a match up against an excellent Nova Jr. Xmen team.  This game proved to be a classic game as the Hurricanes gave everything they had to win a thrilling double overtime 4 – 3 win with the winner coming off Jacob Myra’s stick.  During regulation, the Brad Jones, Michael Anthony and Alex King line were on fire getting all three regulation goals.  Parker Rowter was named player of the game.  Excitement was in the building and in every Hurricane player but no time to celebrate to long as an early Sunday morning semi-final was now in the plans.

Sunday morning final four brought on the Bedford Barons who are leading the standings of the NSMBHL and are just coming off a championship win at the Maritime Cup in Saint John.  From the first drop of the puck, it was evident both teams were there to play hard and space was limited in a very tight checking game.  Commitment to detail and systems proved to be successful because at the end of the second period, Hurricanes Ian MacPhee potted what proved to be the winner with a quick release as the Hurricanes shutout the powerful Barons team with a 1- 0 win to earn a berth in the championship game and a chance to defend their title.  Incredible display of sacrifice and commitment to a team win by all players.  Adam Grimmitt earned the shutout and was named player of the game.

Heading into the Sunday afternoon championship game, Hurricane players were banged up and down to 4 healthy defensemen but no excuses from a determined team.  The final two teams standing were the Hurricanes and the Cape Breton Cougars who had defeated Halifax in their respective semi final game.  Ironically, this year’s championship game was a rematch from last year’s final where the Hurricanes defeated the Cape Breton squad in a classic game by a score of 3 – 2.  The two teams didn’t disappoint the fans this year either.  End to end action with chances at both ends and hard board battles taking the score to 1 – 1 midway through the third period until Cape Breton sniper Derek Gentile scored a shorthanded goal to make it 2 – 1.  In the final 5 minutes, Hurricanes shooters threw pucks at the net and despite glorious chances, the Cape Breton squad held on for a 2 – 1 championship victory leaving the Hurricanes with a hard earned silver medal.  Jacob Myra was named championship game player of the game.

On behalf of the entire Hurricanes organization, congratulations a very solid Cape Breton organization on a deserved win.  The Hurricanes and Cape Breton team have had some good battles over the years and this was another one of those.

As well, 5 Hurricane players took home some tournament hardware as recognized by the tournament award committee.   Captain Matt Barron was named to the First Team All Star on forward, Assistant captain Walter Flower was named to First Team All Star on Defense.  Parker Rowter and Adam Grimitt were named Top Goaltenders of the tournament, sharing the honour.  As well, Jacob Myra was given the prestigious Most Dedicated Player of the tournament award for skill, leadership and all around solid play.

The ownership and executive of the Hurricanes are proud of the coaches and players who make up of this team. We are proud of the continuous improvement, commitment to hard work and to each other.  An impressive commitment of two way hockey, only allowing 9 goals against in 7 games is something to be proud of.

Congratulations Hurricanes on a job well done and a well earned silver medal.  This weekend, it’s back to regular season NSMBHL action with two road games.  Saturday at Bay Gulls and Sunday at Halifax.

Next week, the Hurricanes are heading to Halifax to defend their championship title in the annual Esso Atlantic Challenge Cup.  Stay tuned for results as they become available.

The tournament started with 14 teams from NS, NB and PEI.  In the preliminary round, Hurricanes won 7 - 0 against Kennabacassis Valley in game # 1 and then in game # 2, another solid effort generated a 6 - 0 win over Saint John.  In game # 3, despite outshooting Miramichi 47 - 19, the Hurricanes fell 3 - 1 with an empty netter.  With a 2 & 1 record and being + 11 after three games, the Hurricanes claimed second in their division to qualify for the top 8 quater-finals.  In Saturday evening's quater-final, a tough contest against the Halifax Hawks saw the Hurricanes grind out a 5 - 4 win over the Halifax squad.  The win put the Hurricanes in the final four on Sunday morning.

An early Sunday morning semi final saw the Hurricanes square off against the very good Dartmouth Major Bantam Whalers.  A solid end to end game was on display and despite a really solid effort from the Hurricanes where many excellent scoring chances were generated, Dartmouth came out on top by a score of 5 - 3 with an empty netter late in the dying seconds of the game.

Great weekend of hockey by the entire line up.  This week, the team will work hard and prepare to face the Newbridge Academy Senators on Saturday evening, November 16th at 6:15 PM and on Sunday morning, November 17th at 11:00 AM  at Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool.  Come out and watch great NSMBHL action.

Hurricanes Continue to Gain Momentum

A huge test was presented to the Hurricanes squad this past weekend with two home games against the first place Bay Gulls and the always tough Halifax Hawks.  Prior to the weekend set, the Hurricanes had captured 17 of a possible 18 points in their past 9 games and knew full well they would need to be ready for their competition.

Away from their home confines of Queens Place in Liverpool for this weekend, the squad had to play their home games at the brand new LCLC complex in Bridgewater.  The beautiful facility and the fans were ready to see some great NSMBHL action.

On Saturday, a complete 50 minute effort from every Hurricane player sent the high flying first place Bay Gulls home with only their second loss of the season.  Offensive and defensive efforts resulted in a 5 - 2 win for the Hurrricanes.

A short turn around and the team was facing an always tough Halifax squad Sunday morning.  From the get go, Hurricane players were ready to make it a complete weekend.  Again, with a solid team effort, another victory on the weekend was in the books by defeating the Hawks by a score of 5 - 2.

With the wins, the Hurricanes only sit 3 points out of first place in the NSMBHL and two points out of second gathering 21 of 22 possible points in their last 11 games.  Great job guys !

This weekend, the team is on the road to New Brunswick for the Maritime Challenge Cup tournament in Saint John.

Two Road Wins on Weekend

The BMO Hurricanes squad drove a few miles this past weekend with two road games that took them to Port Hawkesbury on Saturday night and to Pictou on Sunday afternoon.  The drive was worth it as the team came home with two wins and continue to climb in the NSMBHL standings.

On Saturday evening in Port Hawkesbury against the Nova Jr. Xmen, a tight defensive battle was on display by both teams.  Space was hard to find, however, with a strong second and thrid period, Hurricane players grinded out a hard fought 2 - 1 victory.

Following the game in Port Hawkesbury, the team headed back towards Pictou to stay the night to prepare for a game against the Pictou County Crushers on Sunday afternoon. In Sunday's match up, every single player contributed with a solid effort at both ends of the ice on route to a 9 - 0 victory.

This coming weekend, the Valley Wildcats are on town for 2 games.  Saturday evening's game is our PINK in the RINK game.  Please come out to support this.  Puck drop is at 6:15 PM at Queens Place Emera Centre. A great team builiding bus trip to Cape Breton this weekend to face the hard working Cape Breton Cougars in a weekend series resulted in a close loss and a solid win for your BMO Western Hurricanes.

Saturday started early with the bus leaving Yarmouth at 6:00 AM picking up players and parents along the way.  9+ hours later upon arrival in Sydney, the players sat down for a team meal.  When game time came, players had a hard time getting rid of the bus legs as Cape Breton were coming hard.  By the third period, the Hurricanes found their legs but a little too late as they loss a close contest by a score of  2 - 1.

With some post game food and a good nights sleep, all Hurricane players came out hard for 3 periods in Sunday morning's game on route to a 4 - 2 win over a strong Cape Breton Cougars squad.

Harnish Added to Hurricanes Coaching Staff

The BMO Western Hurricanes Hockey Club are pleased to announce that Jagger Harnish has been added to the hockey operations staff as assistant coach for the 2013 – 2014 NSMBHL season.  Jagger is a former Captain of the South Shore Major Midget Mustangs and former draft pick and player with the Bridgewater Junior A Lumberjacks of the MHL.  In addition to his duties with the Hurricane Hockey Program, his summers are busy being a lead instructor with Tom Duffey Hockey Schools and Power Edge Hockey.

Head Coach and GM Brad Muise commented on the hiring, “With Jagger, I know we are adding a solid person with strong leadership qualities.  He played for me in Bantam AAA and Major Midget a few years ago and brought a work ethic that was unmatched.  As a player he was known for his tenacious puck pursuit, physical play, hardnosed approach taking pucks to the net and worked smart at both ends of the ice every shift.  His development over the years as a hockey player was incredible to watch and now that same progress is showing in coaching.   He’s a very well respected young man in the community.  He will be a good influence on our young hockey players.  We are very pleased to add him to the staff.”

Harnish will be joining the current staff of Brad Muise , who is returning for his 4th year as Head Coach with the program.  Adam Masland is returning for his 2nd year with the program as an associate coach.  A.J.  Mackinnon is also going into his 4th year with the team as assistant coach.  Head trainer, Paul Whynot is returning for his 3rd year.  The club has also retained the services of Power Edge Goaltending lead by Jason Knickle for the season.  The Hurricanes organization wish to thank Andrew Holland for his contributions as assistant coach the past two seasons and being a big part of the team’s success.  We also want to wish him all the best with his new coaching position, continuing to develop hockey players in our zone.

Summer Evaluation Camp begins August 21st at Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool.   The hard work players have been doing all summer will be put to the test as they compete for precious roster spots during an intense 3 week camp.  The entire Hurricanes organization is looking forward to the process of finalizing the player roster and to watch the 2013 – 2014 edition carry on the excellent tradition of Hurricane Hockey.

Celebrating Another Great Season

On Wednesday, Hurricane players, parents, family, executive and coaching staff gathered to enjoy an evening of celebrating another fantastic Major Bantam season.  A great meal was had, good stories told, memorable video pictures shown, team awards delivered, fantastic keep sake given and lots of huge smiles filled the room as we honoured the great young hockey players that made up the 2012 – 2013 Hurricanes Hockey program.

The season was full of large accomplishments in all areas of the program, including gaining two Championship banners by winning the Esso Atlantic Cup and the SPUD Cup.  Besides doing a ton of winning since the inception of the program three years ago, we’re producing young men who are also becoming leaders in their schools and communities, and for that we are extremely proud.  We wish all the best to our graduating players and to those players still with us.  We look forward to watching all their future success.   It’s been our honour and privilege to have had you as a Hurricane.

Great job to all involved in Hurricanes Hockey.  GO HURRIACNES !

Hurricanes Bring Home Silver Medal From Provincial Championship

Not exactly the medal color Hurricane players, coaches, family and fans had in mind, however, a proud BMO Western Hurricanes organization battled hard to capture a silver medal at the 2013 Nova Scotia Major Bantam Provincial Championship in Cape Breton this past weekend.

The road to the championship game started on Thursday afternoon with a 5 - 0 shutout win over the Bedford Barons. On Friday morning, in game two of the preliminary round, a solid game resulted in an 8 - 3 win over the Valley Wildcats. Friday evening, Hurricane players continued their winning ways with a 5 - 1 win over the Newbridge Academy Senators. Already being at 3 wins and no loses at that point in the preliminary round, it guaranteed the team a berth in the semifinals. The final game of the preliminary round was against the always tough Cape Breton Cougars. A spirited and fast game ended in a 4 - 3 win for Cape Breton after the Hurricanes let a 3 - 0 third period lead slip away.

When the dust settled following preliminary play, Bedford, Newbridge and Valley were eliminated, leaving Halifax, Cape Breton, Bay Gulls and your BMO Western Hurricanes in the final four playoff round.

Prior to the semifinals, tournament awards were given out. Congratulations to Chris Goreham who was named Top Defenseman and selected to First Team All Star and to Keith Getson for winning the top scorer award of the tournament. Earlier in the weekend, the NSMBHL handed out the league awards and Keith Getson was named the league’s top scorer, the league's top forward and earned a first team all-star selection.

In the first semifinal on Saturday evening, Halifax eliminated Cape Breton with a double overtime victory. In the second semifinal of the night, Hurricane players came out with a 3 - 1 win over the Bay Gulls. This set the stage for a rival matchup between your BMO Western Hurricanes and Halifax Hawks in the 2013 Championship game.

In the highly anticipated final, a tight checking, high paced NSMBHL game was on display. Halifax capitalized on the few chances they had and grabbed a 3 - 0 lead after two periods despite being outshot by the Hurricanes. In the third period, even against many odds, Hurricane players continued to play well, applied pressure and got pucks to the net and cut the lead to 3 - 2 with 4 minutes to play. Continued pressure and shots from the Hurricanes squad on the Halifax goaltender still didnt find the equalizer and with only seconds remaining, Halifax iced the victory with an empty net goal. Congratulations to the Halifax Hawks organization. They will represent our province and league well at the Atlantic Championship later this month.

Even though a solid and complete game from start to finish was played by all Hurricane players, it just didn’t work out for them. The guys emptied the tank, battled like warriors for each other, the organization, their families and fans.  A fantastic effort on this day and all season that will never be forgotten. This team brought together a great bunch of young men who became a family. They formed friendships and a bond that will always be there. The opportunities for these young hockey players are endless because of their skill and character. We're all very proud.  Great season guys !

The Hurricanes Hockey program has been highly successful this season and the past three seasons since inception. There has been a ton of winning and tournament banners that have been earned. All this would not be possible without the guidance and leadership of Team Owner/President, Mr. Larry Creaser and executive member Ian Creaser. Thanks guys.

The entire Hurricanes organization wants to also sincerely thank our title sponsor and supporter, BMO Financial Group. Their support has been tremendous throughout the past 3 seasons. Many small to medium sized companies have also sponsored and supported our players in the official team program. Thank you!

Of course, a huge thanks to the players families for their dedication to the program and to the fans from all the communities along the South Shore and Southwest Nova area who come out to watch and follow Hurricane Hockey. Thanks to the teachers and schools that our players go to, encouraging these young student athletes. Your support is appreciated by all.

Plans for year # 4 are well underway. Spring Identification Camp will be held in late April. Further communication and information will be found on this website.

In game # 1 on Saturday at Cole Harbour Place, a tight checking game was thrown at the Hurricanes, but tenacity, discipline and second efforts payed dividends on route to a  6 - 3 victory to take the series lead.

Game # 2 puck drop was set for only 14 hours later on home ice at Queens Place Emera Centre.  Knowing they had a chance at a series sweep, it was all Hurricanes from the first shift of the game to the end of  game buzzer.  A complete game by the entire line up resulted in an 8 - 1 win.

On Friday, the Hurricanes opened up with an 11 - 1 win over the Cole Harbour - Eastern Shore Storm and on Saturday had a 4 - 4 tie against the Valley Wildcats and a 4 - 4 tie against the Bedford Barons.  When the dust settled with all 12 NSMBHL teams completing their regular season play, the Halifax Hawks earned the league banner as regular season champs with 47 points and have the first place seed entering play-offs.  The Hurricanes were only one point behind with 46 points tied with Cape Breton who also had 46 points.  Cape Breton gets the second place seed based on getting more total wins to achieve their 46 points.  Hurricanes grab the third seed entering the play-offs next weekend.  Check out the regular season standings on the league website for a clear picture of it all.  Another great regular season for the Hurricanes Hockey Program.

The Hurricanes organization would like to recognize a big achievement for our team captain, Keith Getson.  Keith captured the league scoring title with 81 points in only 29 regular season games, combining for 50 goals and 31 assists.  His 50 goals is a Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League record surpassing 49 goals by Nic Blanchard of the Valley Wildcats in the 2010 - 2011 season and his 81 points is also a league record surpassing the 75 points by Layton Parsons of Cole Harbour in the 2011 - 2012 seaon.  Also congrats to goaltenders Luke Emin and Colby Muise who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in goals against average among the 24 league goaltenders.  Luke also led the league with 6 shut outs.

Champions ! Hurricanes Bring Home SPUD Title

February 3, 2013 - Charlottetown,PEI

The guys who make up the 2012 – 2013 BMO Western Hurricanes Hockey Program are coming back to Nova Scotia as SPUD Major Bantam Champions.

By completing the preliminary round with a 8 -1 win over Western PEI, a 7 – 0 win over Sherwood, PEI and a 6 – 0 win over Mid-Isle, PEI, it gave the team a first overall seed heading into the playoff section of the 17 team tournament.  In the quarterfinals on Saturday evening, a dominating 10 – 3 win over West Kent, NB sent the Hurricanes to a Sunday morning semi-final match up with Fredericton.

In the semi-final, Hurricane skaters came with a relentless effort, puck pursuit, attention to systems, details and execution on route to a 3 – 0 victory.  That win propelled the team to the championship game against New Brunswick’s top team, the Saint John Sea Dogs.

In the final, Hurricanes came out quick with two goals to go up 2- 0 early in the first.  As expected, there was no quit in the Sea Dogs as they came back with one of their own to cut the lead to 2 – 1 to end the first period.  In the second, Hurricanes popped another one to go up 3 – 1 until the Sea Dogs capitalized on a power play to make it 3 – 2 going into the third period.  In the third, the hard work, speed and emotion of a game played by two solid teams continued, but it was the Hurricanes who found a way despite adversity to score two more in the period to take the Championship game by a score of 5 – 2.  This tournament victory at the SPUD is the second title in the past 3 years for the Hurricanes Hockey Program with the other win coming in 2011 and a silver medal in 2012.

The weekend was an absolute total team effort, unmatched work ethic with significant contributions on both sides of the puck and in all situations by all line combos, defense pairs and of course solid goaltending.  Also very important to note was the contribution and support from other members of the Hurricanes team: MOMS, DADS, GRANDPARENTS, BROTHERS, SISTERS and FRIENDS who loudly cheered and supported the players all weekend.  Great job of making sure their player was prepared and supported.

Thanks To Fans For Great Weekend

Your Hurricanes battled all weekend to capture three out of four points against a very solid Bay Gulls team, but more importantly, our fans showed extreme support for the local food bank.  A large crowd on Saturday night collectively brought over 100 bags of non pershibale groceries, gave money donations and along with corporate donations from Sobeys and Superstore, it made for a very good night at Queens Place Emera Centre. On behalf of Hurricanes Hockey and the local food bank, we sincerely thank you for all your help.  Thanks hockey fans !

At puck drop on Saturday night, Hurricanes and Bay Gulls were tied for first place in the NSMBHL standings.  When the buzzer ended the game, the story was the same as they battled to a 3 - 3 tie.  Exciting back and forth action gave the large crowd a good game to enjoy.

Sunday morning, another good crowd watched both teams go back to battle with each other.  Again both teams exchanged a few goals early with the Hurricanes holding a 4 - 3 lead after two periods.  In the third period, Hurricanes came out swirling and produced two quick goals to go up 6 - 3.  With time still left,  as expected the tenacious Bay Gulls team made it close with two goals of their own to narrow the gap.  A timeout and a committment to systems by your Hurricanes did the trick in earning a 6 - 5 victory.

With the win and tie this weekend, Hurricanes stand alone in first place in the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League with a regular season record of 18 wins, 3 loses and 6 ties.

For statistical details of the weekend, game results, stats and standings year to date, please check out those sections of the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League website.

The Hurricanes will take the next 10 days or so for some much needed rest and get in some high intensity practices before heading over to PEI on January 31st to participate in the SPUD Tournament where 16 other teams will also be vying for the Championship.

Upon arrival to the rink Saturday night, it was time for business in preperation to battle an excellent Cape Breton Cougars team who stood in first place in the NSMBHL.  From the first drop of the puck to the final buzzer both teams went at each other with back and forth chances and the Hurricanes scoring one more than their opponent to take a 4 - 3 win.  A good post game meal and some much needed sleep for the boys was in order following an exciting game.

Sunday morning was another battle.  Despite outshooting the Halifax squad 32 - 15, Hurricane shooters could not get any through the Halifax netminder.  Halifax players worked hard, blocked shots and also capitilized on their chances to come away with a 2 - 0 win and earn a weekend series split.

Next weekend, the team will be boarding a bus for a trip to Cape Breton where they will play a two game regular season series against the Cape Breton Cougars.

Esso Atlantic Cup Champs !

19 young men from our small communities along the South Shore and Southwest Nova went to Halifax this week to battle their way to an Esso Atlantic Major Bantam Championship as proud members of the Western Hurricanes Hockey Club.  With relentless effort, they did just that, bringing home a championship banner !

The 2012 Esso Atlantic Major Bantam Cup started this past Wednesday with the top 24 teams in Atlantic Canada.  It’s known as one of the toughest tournaments to win because of the amount of teams, the level of competition and the grind of playing 7 games in 4 days if you get to the championship.  During the preliminary round, your Hurricanes started the tournament with a 2 – 2 tie against Truro on Wednesday.  Thursday saw us up against Moncton and a complete game gave us a 5 – 0 win.  Friday brought the Saint John Seadogs, who previously entering the tournament had not lost a game all season until they met your Hurricanes.  Another solid effort gave us a 3 – 2 win.  The battle with a very good Saint John team propelled the team’s confidence going into the final preliminary game against Peninsula Acadienne of NB on Saturday morning.  In that game, a 6 – 0 victory was gained.  With the preliminary games over, the top 8 teams of the tournament moved onto the quarterfinals.  Your Hurricanes were ranked second overall with 3 wins, 1 tie and 16 goals for with only 4 against.

During the Saturday evenings quarterfinals, the 7th ranked high skilled KV Rangers of New Brunswick were the opponents.  Again with incredible attention to details and second efforts, your Hurricanes came out with a 3 – 0 win and a berth in Sunday morning’s semifinals.

Again, here come the Saint John Seadogs as opponents in the semifinals.  As they were looking for retribution, your Hurricanes pushed back even harder on route to a 3 – 1 victory.

With a very short turnaround time of about 3 hours between the semifinals and championship game, players began to physically and mentally prepare for a battle against the Cape Breton Cougars.  Cape Breton too, came into the contest undefeated all season.  Your Hurricanes knew that they were facing an exceptionally good Cape Breton team who battle hard every shift.  Your Hurricanes came out flying, gaining a 3 – 0 lead heading into the third period.  Cape Breton, as is expected, did not give up and narrowed the gap to one with two third period goals.  However, Hurricane players did everything champs need to do in order to win and when the final buzzer of the week went off … it was a 4 – 2 championship win.

It was a great week of hockey displayed by all 24 teams in the tournament, a well run tournament by the Halifax Major Bantam organization.

Without question, this was a total team effort of 19 young men contributing to a championship.  In 7 games, scoring 26 goals for and only 6 against equates into a total team effort.  Great job boys, the entire organization, the fans, your friends / family and supporters of Hurricane Hockey are so proud of you!

During the awards ceremony, Colby Muise and Luke Emin were named as co –winners of the tournament’s top goaltender award.  Defensemen, Quinten Johnson was named to the tournament’s Second Team All Star team and captain Keith Getson was named tournament MVP.  Congratulations.

OT Loss in Semi Final at Maritime Cup

The Maritime Cup in Saint John, NB this weekend started with 19 Major Bantam teams across the Maritimes vying for the tournament championship.

Your Hurricanes started their preliminary round on Friday morning with a contest against the Dieppe Flyers.  From start to finish, a solid performance over the Dieppe squad resulted in a 9 - 0 win.  Game two came later that afternoon against the Charlottetown Abbies and with another solid effort from everyone, your Hurricanes came out with a 9 - 1 victory.  Day 1 ended with the guys deserving of the two wins and some good rest to get ready for more battles on Saturday.

With a good nights sleep, Game 3 had the Fredericton Capitals up next as opponents in afternoon play.  With a shot count of 59 - 8 in favour of the Hurricanes squad, a 3 - 0 shutout victory gave us an undefeated record in the preliminary round.  Besides the 3 wins, the teams goals for of 21 and only 1 against qualified the team as the # 1 seed out of the 8 seeds that qualified for the quarterfinals on Saturday evening.  In the quarterfinals, your Hurricanes faced the Truro Bearcats and won 3 - 1, earning a berth in the final four semi finals on Sunday morning

Semi final sunday morning had your Hurricanes facing the Bay Gulls while Halifax faced the Saint John Seadogs in the other semi final.

Despite Hurricane players outshooting the Gulls by a solid margin, having numerous quality scoring chances and working hard all game, the Bay Gulls came out with a 2 - 1 Overtime victory over your Hurricanes.

Saint John ended up defeating the Bay Gulls in the Championship final by a score of 3 - 2.

Tournament summary:
- 4 wins & 1 overtime loss
- 25 goals for & 4 against
- Game MVP recipients: Matt Barron, Keith Getson, Christopher Goreham, Logan Walters and Colby Muise
- Great two way play and battle level by all 19 players.

Goaltender Coach Receives Prestigious Scholarship

The Hurricanes organization is truly proud to announce that our Goaltender Coach the past two seasons, Andrew Caines, has been awarded the prestigious Garfield Weston Scholarship Award.  This award is in recognition of community involvement, volunteer experience, high marks and school involvement at a post secondary institution.

The Garfield Weston Award is the largest scholarship available for community college students. The scholarship has a value of $12000 + a tuition waiver. Also included are a number of leadership conferences throughout the country, a summer work program, a two week course in Europe studying International Business and two weeks in the Netherlands studying the marketing of sustainable energy. It is provided by the Weston family, most notably the owners of the Loblaw's chain.

An amazing achievement for a young man who has been putting in countless hours leading our goaltenders to the best Goals Against Average in the league the past two seasons, all the while earning top honours as a full time student.

Unfortunately, Andrew won't be able to commit to coaching our tenders this season as he continues his studies and heavy work load. The entire Hurricanes family want to thank Andrew for his committment and knowledge to the Hurricanes Hockey Program and wish him all the best with his future endeavors.

Congratulations to a well respected and well liked guy !

Our Allie is Heading State Side in the Fall

The Hurricanes are real proud to announce that graduating player Allie Munroe will be attending New Hampton Prep School in New Hampshire this fall where she will be dominating the blueline for the New Hampton Huskies.

Allie was regarded as one of the most consistent and steady defencemen in the NSMBHL this past season, possessing great puck moving abilities along with a solid hockey IQ and unreal one on one skills.  Ask any forward in this league and they'll tell you that she is difficult to play against and a fierce competitor.

In addition to that, this summer she will be attending the Beantown Classic and the HNIB tournaments which are held just outside of Boston with Team One USA in the future division AAA and also back home she will be attending the U17 camp in Antigonish later this month.

Congratulations # 9 !

Celebrating Another Successful Season ! Big Thanks to our Sponsors !

The BMO Western Hurricanes family of players, staff, executive members, parents, family members and fans gathered at the Best Western Hotel in Bridgewater to celebrate another successful NSMBHL season by the Hurricanes.

The wonderful evening began with a few stories, season recaps, reflection of another championship season and many laughs.  As a continuous slide show of pictures from the entire year was being shown on the big screeen, an incredible catered meal was provided by the staff of the Best Western.  Following some more social time and laughs, the focus turned to a speech from the coach, the team captains and our team owner, who really inspired the audience with his thoughts.  As the evening went on, it was truly enjoyable seeing the players receive their awards and their surprise gifts that they all certainly earned.  A couple of more closing stories followed and many thanks of appreciation were shared among all.
A season goes by way too fast !  It was evident the players didn't want the evening to end and have to leave all their close buddies.  But, good byes for now were said as they all walked away knowing they were part of something special and had a great hockey experience and are certainly prepared for their next season.

The evening also offered an opportunity to sincerely thank our Major corporate partner, BMO - Bank of Montreal.  BMO has been a huge part of our success and we are sincerely grateful.  We look forward to the continued partnership in bringing these great hockey experiences to the young hockey players in western Nova Scotia

We also wish to thank Irving Oil for their support of the Western Hurricanes and their support of Major Bantam Hockey throughout Atlantic Canada.

Our official team program was a success and enjoyed by the fans of the Hurricanes.  Sincere thank you goes out to all the small, medium and large businesses who participated in the program.  Your support of Hurricanes Hockey is truly appreciated by all.

Hurricanes Win Bronze Medal at Provincials

It may not be exactly the medal color your Hurricanes were after, but a bronze medal in this highly competitive NSMBHL Provincial Championship tournament is certainly something to be proud of.

From the onset of the Provincial tournament, your Hurricanes did everything in their power to set themselves up to win gold. The team won all 4 preliminary games to be in first place after the round robin portion of the tournament.

Here`s how the story went: In game # 1 on Thursday, your Hurricanes opened up with a 4 - 1 victory over Newbridge Academy Senators in a spirited and physical game.  Then, with two games on Friday, they defeated the Bedford Barons 5 - 0 in a early afternoon tilt and again took home a 3 -2 victory against the Valley Wildcats in a night game that saw a huge crowd at Queens Place cheering on their Hurricane players. With a quick turn around and a chance to clinch first place, the Hurricanes again came out flying against the Cape Breton Cougars on route to a 9 - 1 win on Saturday morning. With 4 straight wins and a first place seeding in their back pocket, it was now rest time to prepare for their semi - final match up against the Bedford Barons (4th seed) on Sunday morning. The other 2 teams to qualify for the semi-finals were Halifax Hawks (2nd seed) and Bay Gulls. (3rd seed)

In the semi-final game, the Barons came out with 3 quick goals in the first 9 minutes of the first period and had the Hurricanes on the ropes. But, as shown all season, Hurricane players know how to battle. With a quick chance to collect themselves and re-focus, the Hurricanes applied lots of offensive pressure and got a goal at the end of the first and another midway through the second period to get them right back in it and make it 3-2 as they headed into the third period.

The third brought more great play by the Hurricanes and a large amount of quality chances with 5 or more pucks hitting posts and crossbars and pucks just sliding by open nets but when the final buzzer sounded, despite the Hurricanes outshooting Bedford by a large margin of 38 - 18, the tying goal eluded them. The final score was 3 - 2 Bedford. A heartbroken group that won the NSMBHL Championship Banner gave everything they had and put on a great display for their fans.

The Hurricanes would like to thank all the huge crowds that came out to support the team all weekend and also watch all the participating teams in this NSMBHL Provincial Championships. Amazing crowds all weekend were raving about the top quality brand of hockey that the players of the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League displayed. Also, huge thanks to all the dedicated folks who volunteered their time this weekend to put on this tournament from the 50 - 50 sales, ticket sales, opening ceremonies and a fabulous hospitality room. Thanks to our tournament Chair Ian Creaser, Co - Chairs Janet Creaser and Janet Baker who hosted a class act tournament. Western Nova Scotia hospitality and professionalism at its finest !

Now … Back to hockey! In the other semi -final, the Bay Gulls battled their way to a 3 - 2 win over the Halifax Hawks creating a Bedford vs. Bay Gulls Championship game. The Championship saw the Bay Gulls win 3 - 1 over Bedford. Both semi - finals and the Championship game were played with high pace, skill and end to end action. Fans were treated to a great day of hockey watching the top Bantam aged hockey players in Nova Scotia. It is sometimes hard to believe these young hockey players and future prospects are only 13 and 14 years old.

Congratulations to the Bay Gulls on their win and who will certainly represent the NSMBHL and province well at the Irving Oil Major Bantam Atlantic Championships beginning on March 29 in Halifax. The Halifax Hawks will also represent our league as the host team.

Other Hurricane Highlights:

1) During the opening ceremonies on Thursday, the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League presented it`s league awards. The Hurricanes players and coaching staff were presented with the NSMBHL Championship Banner and League Championship trophy for leading the league for the second straight year. Two Hurricanes players had their name called to receive NSMBHL awards: Jordan Messenger was named to the 2nd Team League All Star Team as a forward and Mitch Baker was named to the 1st Team All Star Team as a defenseman. Congratulations guys!

2) Rookie forward Travis Parks won the shootout competition during the tournament skills competition by getting 4 out of his 5 breakaway chances through the opposing goaltender.

3) Following the Saturday afternoon skills competition, the award winners for the provincial tournament were announced. A few Hurricane players were honoured for their solid play over the weekend: Cole Mulrooney was named All Star defenseman, Matt Quigley was named All Star Forward, Jordan Messenger was named Top Scorer for the Tournament and Aaron Mantle received the Top Goaltender Award and Tournament MVP. Congratulations guys!

Another great season was had by the Hurricanes Major Bantam Hockey Program.  We repeated as NSMBHL League Champions, made every semi-final or final of all tournaments entered and compiled an overall record of 44 wins, 10 loses and 3 ties. The team was a group of talented and hard working players on the ice and greater people off the ice. Most importantly, the Hurricanes Hockey Program has prepared and developed players for the next level and their rookies to take over leadership of the Hurricanes and carry on the standard and tradition of Hurricanes Hockey !

Stay tuned for news over the next couple of weeks about Spring Identification Camp as we prepare for Season 3

Hurricanes Loose in Semi - Final at Memorial Tournament

A short handed Hurricane line up worked very hard all weekend in the 12 team tournament on route to winning their division.  The road to winning the division included players playing other positions, many extra shifts and quick recovery to go back out there with more high energy shifts.  On Friday morning the Hurricanes made a big comeback after being down early 3 - 0 to score five unanswered goals to beat Newbridge Academy 5 - 3.  On Friday evening, a battle for the entire game against the Nova Jr. X- Men resulted in a 2 - 2 tie.  On Saturday evening, a high tempo game against the Dartmouth Ice Dawgs resulted in a 3 - 2 win for the Hurricanes to clinch their division in the tournament.

Saturday evening during the tournament awards ceremony, Assistant Captain and veteran defenseman Mitch Baker was named to the Tournament All Star team.  Congratulations Mitch !

On Sunday morning, the 3 division winners + a wildcard team qualified for the semi-finals. The Hurricanes played the high flying Bubba Rays Bay Gulls who won their respective division in a fast paced contest to try to earn a berth in the finals. Despite outshooting the Gulls and having numerous quality scoring chances, the Gulls goaltender answered the call.  All Hurricane players did all they could to score but could not overcome the 2 - 0 lead by the Gulls. With an empty net to try to put some pucks in, the Gulls managed an empty netter to make the final 3 - 0.  The Bay Gulls went on to win the Pictou County Memorial Tournament.

A great effort and character was on display by our goaltenders, defense and forwards battling through injuries to play a solid weekend of hockey.  Great job !

The players and coaching staff look to continue working hard heading into the playoffs and at the Nova Scotia Provincial Championships in mid-March where the team will be presented with the league trophy and banner.  Congratulations to all the players ! Great job, keep working hard !

Silver Medal Earned at SPUD Tournament

19 Major Bantam AAA teams were in Charlottetown, PEI this past weekend competing for the annual SPUD Tournament Championship.

In preliminary round action on Friday morning, your Hurricanes faced the Miramichi Rivermen in game # 1.  The Hurricanes dominated the Rivermen on route to an 8 -1 victory with solid play from start to finish.  In game # 2 on Friday evening, a match up with the Pownal Red Devils was in store.  The Red Devils thought they had an answer for the Hurricanes by trying to hit everything, forgetting that the Hurricanes could respond with the same physicality but also add speed, skill, puck movement and systems that the Red Devils could not handle.  When the game ended, it was another 8 - 1 Hurricanes win.

Early Saturday morning brought game # 3 against a very big Mid Isle Matrix team.  Both teams played a careful game in the first period with back and forth action. In the second and third periods, the Hurricane attack took over resulting in the game being blown wide open.  When all the scoring was counted, Hurricane shooters put seven goals by the Mid Isle goaltender in a 7 - 3 win.

With the preliminary round complete, only 8 of the 19 teams would qualify for the quarterfinals.  With 3 wins and 23 goals for and only 5 goals against, the Hurricanes finished in first place among the 19 teams and grabbed the first overall seed heading into the quarterfinals.  This position had # 8 seed, Newbridge Academy Senators as the Hurricanes opponent.  As had been the case all tournament, the team got contrubutions in production and battle effort from the entire line up to beat the Senators 6 - 1 in the quarterfinal game.

With a late Saturday night win in the quarterfinals, Hurricane players had to get some immediate rest for an early Sunday morning semi final game.  The tournament now had 4 teams remaining and the Hurricanes had to face the Kennabacassis Valley Rangers from Saint John, NB area in the semi finals.  The Hurricanes came out hard and furious from the start and didn't let off in a dominating performance to win 4 - 0 and earn a berth in the championship game.

In the championship game, the Hurricanes squared off against the hard working Pictou County Crushers.  The Hurricanes again came out hard outshooting and outchancing the Crushers but the Crushers goaltender was red hot, not allowing anything to get by him.  Despite lots of shots, net traffic and chances off the attack and cycle, the Hurricanes could only find a 1 - 0 lead midway through the second period only to have the Crushers tie it up shortly after and the Crushers score another quick one to go up 2 - 1 after the second period.  In the third, the Hurricanes continued the pressure, but Crushers defenders and their goalie were up to the task until the Hurricanes pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker and jammed one home with 22 seconds left to tie the game and send it into overtime.

The first overtime was 4 on 4 with numerous high quality chances and even breakaways from Hurricanes players but it resulted in nothing.  Off to the second overtime of 3 on 3 where again excitng chances, hit posts and crossbars by Hurricane shooters generated no results.  In the third overtime of 2 on 2, the Crushers ended it with a hard working rebound shot to win the well earned championship.

A great weekend of consistent, high tempo hockey displayed by the Hurricanes resulted in a silver medal for the Hurricanes. Another great showcase of the Hurricanes Hockey Program.  Great job by the entire group.  Hurricane centreman, Keith Getson was named MVP of the tournament.  Congratulations Keith.

This weekend the Hurricanes get back to regular season NSMBHL action with a home and home series with the Valley Mutual Kings Wildcats.  Our home game of this series is on Saturday, February 11th at 4:00 PM at Queens Place Liverpool.  Come out to see great hockey and support the team.

Hurricanes Calm the Storm

It was a physical home and home series against the Harbour Storm this weekend and your Hurricanes came out with two big victories to take a commanding lead of first place in the NSMBHL.

Facing adversity with Captain Morgan Lunn out long term and Assistant Captain Mitch Baker out of the line up all weekend, all Hurricane defensemen took over their minutes and played extremely solid.  Both our goaltenders made timley saves, looked confident and our forwards contributed both defensively and offensively.

On Saturday evening at home in Liverpool, Hurricane shooters fired 43 shots on the opponents goaltender while only allowing 13 against.  Solid efforts by all players in all zones created a 5 - 1 victory for your Hurricanes.

On Sunday, the physical contact was escalated by both squads but it was your Hurricanes who won the battle on route to a  4 - 2 win on the road.

Next weekend brings a road trip to Truro to face the Bearcats in the lone game of the weekend for your Hurricanes.

Hurricanes Battle Hard To Earn Split with Halifax

Your first place Hurricanes were in a home and home NSMBHL weekend series with a very good Halifax Hawks team.  On Saturday in Liverpool, a defensive effort with some scoring chances generated by both clubs resulted in the Halifax squad getting a 1 - 0 victory.  Hurricanes shooters put lots of pucks at the Halifax netminder but could not generate the goals they were looking for.

The loss on Saturday did not sit well with the Hurricanes group.  With that in mind as they headed down the highway to Halifax for a Sunday afternoon rematch, the entire line up showed they were ready to play.  With solid efforts on both  sides of the puck, your Hurricanes battled their way to a solid 6 - 1 win.

The team now gets ready for a home and home series next weekend with the Cole Harbour - Eastern Shore Storm. Come out to support your team next Saturday on January 21st at 4:00 PM at Queens Place in Liverpool.

Bearcats Defeat Hurricanes

Despite doubling the Truro squad in shots, it just wasn't enough and it takes more than that to earn victories. The Bearcats received outstanding goaltending from Luke Melanson by stopping 40 shots from Hurricane shooters and they also got great defensive work ethic, second efforts and a large battle level by all Bearcat players on route to a 4 - 1 victory over your Hurricanes.

The Bearcats played a smart and solid game and held a 3 goal lead until the Hurricanes answered with one at the mid point of the third. Truro iced the game with an empty netter in the dying seconds to complete the win.

The players will regroup this week with practice and prepare to face the Halifax Hawks with a home and home weekend series. Come out to watch great NSMBHL action this Saturday, January 14th at 4:00 PM vs. Halifax Hawks at the beautiful Queens Place facility in Liverpool.

Category 5 Effort From Everyone

A good week of battle ready practice had your Hurricanes prepared for a two game series against the second place Bay Gulls this weekend.

When the puck droped in game one Saturday night, it was evident that both teams wanted it bad.  The speed was up, the battles intense and great NSMBHL action was on display for the home town crowd at the new Queens Place facility.  Shift after shift, Hurricane players applied pressure and executed on every inch of the ice on route to a 7 - 1 victory with solid contributions from the entire line up.

Game two Sunday afternoon in Chester brought the same level of intensity from both squads with exciting end to end action that many fans commented on.  Your Hurricanes opened the scoring only to have the Gulls tie it up on a power play opportunity.  However, only a few minutes later, incredible work ethic down low in the Gulls zone gave the Hurricanes a 2 - 1 lead heading into the second intermission.  The third brought chances for both teams, but the Hurricanes executed an offensive attack with a few minutes left to give them a 3  - 1 victory.

Check out the game results, team stats for statistical details of the weekend games and entire year to date.

We continue to lead the NSMBHL heading into the Holiday break and will resume regular season play with a home game against the Truro Bearcats on January 7th in Barrington.  The players and staff  will use this time to have a few practices, have some team building get togethers, get injuries to a number of players healed and most importantly spend time with family and friends.

The Hurricane family wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  We look forward to your continued support in the New Year.

Succesful Home Weekend

With the fast and highly skilled Bedford Barons coming to Hurricane towns this past weekend for a two game series, we knew we were in for a battle.

Saturday evening in Barrington, your Hurricanes came out hard from the get go and built up a solid lead that Bedford could not overcome on route to a 7 - 2 Hurricane victory.

In the Sunday afternoon match up in Chester in front of a supportive home crowd, your Hurricane squad again earned a solid 4 - 0 lead heading into the second intermission.  However, in the third, Bedford came out firing with 3 goals in just over 7 minutes to make the score 4 - 3 until Hurricane centremen Jordan Messenger iced the game with an empty netter with just over 30 seconds left on the clock to give the Hurricanes a 5 - 3 win.  It was an exciting battle and great NSMBHL action by both teams.

The Hurricanes family wish all the best to Co-Captain Morgan Lunn in his recovery over the next few weeks from his injury and Co- Captain Ty Duffus who will be out for another couple of weeks as well.

For statistical details of both weekend games, check out the results tabs of our website.

The offense and depth scoring continued with two big wins against a hard working Pictou County Crushers squad. In Sunday aftertnoon's tilt, the Huricane was swirling fast and furious on route to a 6 - 0 shutout win against the Crushers.  Aaron Mantle recorded his 2nd shutout of the season for your Hurricanes.

Solid play on both sides of the puck along with a high battle level and contrubution from the entire line up has the team in first place in the NSMBHL standings.

Hurricanes Make Final Four at Esso Atlantic Cup

The Esso Atlantic Major Bantam Cup started with 24 teams from NS, NB and PEI vying for a championship title.  The intense week of play in the most highly regarded Bantam tournament in Eastern Canada began Wednesday with quailification games.

Your Hurricanes began their qualification play on Thursday with a match up with the Truro Bearcats.  A strong effort from all generated  a 5 - 0 win over the Bearcats and got the Hurricanes going towards their goal.  Only 3 hours later, your Hurricanes had to face the   powerful Saint John Seadogs.  Even with a slow start, Hurricane players showed why they hold first place in the NSMBHL by coming out with a hard fought 4 - 3 win.  With two wins under their belt after day one; Friday brought the very solid Bay Gulls as their opponent, a match up that later determined first overall.  The game had playoff intensity and a good crowd were very interested in watching the battle of two good hockey clubs.  When the dust settled, a 2 - 2 tie remained.  Incredible second and third periods by your Hurricanes along with quality scoring chances still could not settle the tie.  Game # 4 on Saturday morning had the squad facing the Miramichi Rivermen in a game that needed to be won handily to ensure a top seeding heading into the quarterfinals.  That is exactly what the team did in a 7 - 0 commanding win.

Early Saturday afternoon, all qualification play was completed by all 24 teams.  The results of those games sent 16 teams home and only 8 teams qualified for Saturday night's quaterfinal match ups.  Your Hurricanes were seeded 4th overall with a qualification round record of 3 wins and a tie, only one goal away from taking the first overall seed.  In their quaterfinal match up they faced the Pictou County Crushers.  Your Hurricanes came out flying from the get go and played solid on every inch of the ice on route to a 4 - 2 win and a berth in the Final Four semi-final Sunday morning.

With only four teams remaining, the semi final match up had the very good Halifax Hawks as our opponent.  Your Hurricanes out-shot and out-chanced the Hawks, but it was not to be as the Hawks managed to put the 2 -1 game away with an empty netter in the last 30 seconds to get the 3 -1 win.

After the game, head coach Muise commented " ... we played a solid game, we deserved better in many ways, we won so many battles out there on the ice, just unfortunate that the scoreboard tells a different story.  We just couldn't bury the multiple chances we had this morning.  The puck pursuit and the pressure we put on them was constant.  The whole coaching staff are very pleased with the play of our squad today and all week, we were solid on both sides of the puck and we are very proud of the statement our players made this week.  It was a really good week of hockey along with the display of the great character in our dressing room from every single player.  My assistant coaches and training staff did an excellent job during this long, intense week of hockey preparing our players to compete."

Regular season play resumes this coming weekend in the NSMBHL when your BMO Western Hurricanes host two home games in Barrington against the Pictou County Crushers.  Saturday, December 3rd at 7:30 pm and Sunday, December 4th at 12:00 noon.  Come out and support your first place Hurricanes in fast paced NSMBHL action.

Hurricanes Prepare to Defend Esso Atlantic Cup Championship

Your Hurricanes hit the road Saturday for a tilt with the Pictou County Crushers looking to increase their first place lead in the NSMBHL standings.  A strong effort from start to finish and contributions from every Hurricane resulted in a decisive 6 - 0 victory for your Hurricanes.

With a quick turnaround of only 14 hours before their next game, your Hurricanes began their trek up the highway for a Sunday morning contest against the Harbour Storm at Cole Harbour Place.  With as good a preperation as you can with such a quick turnaround, Hurricanes players were obviously committed to each other as they battled their way to a 10 - 1 win.  An incredible effort by each member of the squad showcased the teams depth all weekend.

Statistical details of the weekend games are available under the game results tab of the team and league websites.

The team now turns their attention to defending their 2010 Esso Atlantic Challenge Cup Major Bantam Championship title this week.  The Esso Atlantic Cup is a 24 team tournament hosted in Halifax with teams from NS, NB and PEI.  The tournament begins Wednesday evening with a game vs. Truro Bearcats, Thursday vs. Saint John Seadogs, Friday vs. Bay Gulls and Saturday vs. Miramichi.  Tournament playoff action is set for Saturday and Sunday.

Hurricanes Roar Into First Place

With the possibilty of capturing first place with two road victories this weekend, every single Hurricane player came to work focused with a goal in mind.  On Saturday night in Truro, your Hurricanes came out with a purpose and earned a 5 - 2 victory.  On Sunday afternoon in East Hants against the Newbridge Academy Senators, all your Hurricane players were again warriors with a battle level and want that led us to a 4 - 0 shutout win.

The victories this weekend came at the expense of having two players suffer broken wrists in the same weekend.  The Hurricane organization are looking forward to speedy recoveries for Ty Duffus and Dominic O'Halloran.  These two Hurricane warriors will be back stronger than ever in a few weeks.

The Hurricanes hit the road this upcoming weekend for two NSMBHL games against Pictou County on Saturday and Harbour Storm on Sunday.

Goalie Clinic a success

Aaron Mantle and Jacob Key put on their pads and spent their Sunday morning giving back along with Hurricanes goalie coach Andrew Caines and Hurricanes Assitant coach AJ MacKinnon.

The remaining Hurricanes in the photos provided the shooting to test the skills of some hard working net minders. O'Halloran, Quigley, Parks, J. Creaser and Bridge were all trying to light the lamp against some of the young prospects and potential future Hurricanes.

Former Hurricane smashes on to National spotlight

Former Hurricane Catherine Tufts worked her way through the Team Atlantic line up with hard work and effort. With the extra effort came the extra ice time she was hoping for. As a member of Team Atlantic Catherine enjoyed helping the team to it's forth place finish but admittedly they wanted more. Coming up against a tough Manitoba squad in the Bronze Medal game "Cat" scored the lone Team Atlantic goal but it wasn't enough to vault the team into a medal position as Manitoba potted three. There were plenty of positives though as Cat managed to finish 8th overall in scoring with two goals and two assists which included a power play marker in just 5 games.

Cat will now take as short break before returning to the Ontario Hockey Academy which is the prep school she attends while pursuing her hockey career.

Great job Cat you represented your Hurricane's well and we look forward to more exciting news in the future.

Hurricanes active during Development Weekend

The Western Hurricanes were in communities from Barrington to Lunenburg over the weekend as Coach Muise had his staff and players out in full force to support the minor hockey initiative known as Development Weekend.

Coach Muise said the management, players and staff felt good about giving back to their communities and helping to support the young hockey players in our area.

Perhaps next year your team may get the opportunity to have the Hurricane staff and players visit your rink!

A wonderful and supportive crowd was on hand Sunday afternoon in Barrington to show their support for the fight against Breast Cancer and Cancer Awareness.  The Hurricanes organization are really grateful for the support in helping us donate to this great cause. Please take a look at more photos of the day in the "photo gallery section".  It was a fun day at the rink !

Thanks to outstanding goaltending by Aaron Mantle, your Hurricanes were very fortunate to come out with a 3 - 2 victory in their Friday evening road game in a lacklustre effort against the Valley Wildcats.  On Sunday for their Pink in the Rink game, Hurricane force winds were roaring on the South Shore and in the Barrington Arena.  Your Hurricanes came out to show the supportive crowd why they are only a point out of first place in the NSMBHL standings.  With solid, hard working play from start to finish, the final was Hurricanes 7, NewBridge Academy 1.  Jacob Key was sharp in nets and only had the shutout broken late in the third.  All lines, D pairings contributed in a real deep team effort.  Check out the game results section for statistical details of the weekend games.

The Hurricanes are only one point behind Halifax for top spot in the NSMBHL standings as they head into a weekend off.  This weekend your Hurricane players will be participating in helping out younger minor hockey players around the South Shore and SouthWest Nova in various development weekend activities.  The players are very much looking forward to participating in this great experience.

Waking up early Saturday morning to board the bus for a road trip to Cape Breton with a focus on returning home with two victories was top priority.  Your BMO Western Hurricane players did excatly that by erurting with 9 goals in a 9-2 victory on Saturday night.  An early wake up call Sunday morning and a good breakfast prepared for the players had them heading to the rink ready to sweep the weekend.  A hard fought game from start to finish had your Hurricanes come out with a 3-2 win.  The scoring, playmaking and strong battle level was well spread out through the line up from forwards and defensemen and  the goaltending tandem were really solid between the pipes.  Please see the game results section for statistical details of the games.  Also check out the NSMBHL main website for league standings.

Weekend Sweep of Dartmouth Ice Dawgs

Your BMO Western Hurricanes are moving very close to the top in the NSMBHL standings after winning both road games this weekend against a hard working Dartmouth MCK Ice Dawgs squad.

On Saturday night, Hurricanes players managed to overcome much adversity and playing shorthanded for most of the first and second period.  The great work on the PK was on display as Hurricane penalty killers held the Ice Dawgs to very little opportunities.  Players continued to work hard and cashed in with five unanswered goals; two by Keith Getson, singles from Isaac Bridge, Cameron Jacquard and Christopher Goreham.  A solid defensive effort by everyone in limiting Dartmouth to nine shots had a focused Jacob Key earn a shutout for his squad.

On Sunday afternoon, the MCK Ice Dawgs came out hard from start to finish but strong crease work by Hurricanes goaltender Aaron Mantle and battle level by the D-Men held Dartmouth to only one goal as Hurricane shooters Jack Creaser, Matt Quigley and Ty Duffus scored three timely goals.  Make the final:  Hurricanes 3, Dartmouth 1.

After Sunday's game, along with the win, the team presented Head Coach Brad Muise with a beautiful "Cake Boss" like Western Hurricanes cake to celebrate his birthday.  With some hungry hockey pleayers, the cake didnt last very long !

This upcoming weekend, your BMO Western Hurricanes jump on the bus Saturday morning to travel to Cape Breton to play the Cape Breton Major Bantam Cougars in a weekend series in North Sydney.

Hurricanes Playing Strong

Your BMO Hurricanes entered the weekend with the task of facing the Bedford Barons and league leading Bay Gulls.

Entering Saturday's game in Bedford, your Hurricanes and Bedford were tied for 3rd place in the 12 team NSMBHL.  It was evident from the start,  Hurricane players were ready to play.  With a strong forcheck and battlle level down low, timely scoring, solid play by all D pairings and great goaltending, your Hurricanes came out on top with a 5 - 1 victory to grab sole possession of third place.

On Sunday, the second road game of the weekend took us to the Halifax Forum to face the league leading Bay Gulls.  With a victory, your Hurricanes would be tied with the Gulls for top spot in the league standings.  With this on the line, both squads played a game comparable to playoff speed and intensity.  Despite being around the Gulls net all afternoon, outchancing and outshooting the Gulls, Hurricane shooters were snake bitten all afternoon.  A really solid, entertaining hockey game from start to finish, constatntly putting pressure on the Bay Gulls, your Hurricanes could only manage to slide one goal by the Bay goaltender.  When the final buzzer sounded, the very good Gulls team came out on top with a 2 -1 victory.  With a split of this weekends games, we now have sole possesion of third place entering the Thanksgiving Holiday break.

The Hurricanes have Thanksgiving weekend off to relax with family and friends while the NSMBHL does not have any games scheduled due to the U14/U15/U16 Atlantic Challenge Cup.  The Hurricanes family wish all the best to Hurricane players Keith Getson who will represent Nova Scotia on the U14 team, Morgan Lunn who will represent Nova Scotia on the U15 team and Allie Munroe who will represent Nova Scotia on the female U15 team.  Good luck to all three.

Next up for the Hurricanes in NSMBHL action, the team travels to play Dartmouth MCK Ice Dawgs for two games on October 15th and 16th.

Hurricanes Earn Split on Opening Weekend

Two very entertaining hockey games were played this weekend at the Bridgewater Arena when your BMO Hurricanes hosted the Cape Breton Cougars and Halifax Hawks on Saturday and Sunday evening.

On Saturday, the Hurricanes had many chances to put the game away going into the third with a 5 - 3 lead, but the Cougars kept pressing and were able to tie it up until Isaac Bridge's game winning goal in the final minute of play gave the Hurricanes a 6 - 5 victory over Cape Breton.  A great crowd was on hand to watch this victory in the opening game of the 2011- 2012 season.  The Hurricanes would like to thank their title sponsor BMO for performing the opening ceremonial face off.

On Sunday, the Hurricanes put on a much better defensive effort in their battle against the Halifax Hawks.  Another entertaining game resulted in the Halifax Hawks defeating the Hurricanes by a score of  2 - 1 in front of another good home crowd.  Despite outshooting Halifax 31 - 20 and putting 21 shots on the Halifax goaltender in the third period alone,  Hurricane shooters could not manage to squeeze another one pass the steady Halifax goaltender to tie the game.  Great effort by all players, no luck around the net but a very solid game played by your Hurricanes.

Next weekend, the Hurricanes host the Nova Jr. X-Men at the Barrington Arena on Saturday evening at 7:30 pm and Sunday morning at 11:00 am.  Come out to support your team and watch great Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League action.

Week # 1 of Evaluation Camp - Update

The BMO Western Hurricanes coaching staff are extremely happy with week one of camp. " The players have come prepared to compete.  All three sessions were at a high pace and the execution level has been very impressive considering it's only August. There's a lot of character in camp and the battle level is certainly on display", commented Head Coach Brad Muise.

With the weekend off, the 4 goaltenders, 13 forwards and 9 defensemen in camp will have a few days of rest before week # 2 gets underway on Tuesday, August 23rd in Yarmouth.  Stay tuned for more updates over the next week.

Hurricanes to break camp in just two short weeks

With less than two weeks to go players have precious little time to ramp up their fitness levels to prepare for the opportunity to gain a roster spot on the 2011/12 Hurricane squad. After the season the team accomplished last year the expectations are high to continue the "Hurricane Hockey" tradition.

There are a lot of talented kids in the camp and the staff are looking forward to the competition for roster spots that are available.

Our hope is they will each bring their best effort every time they hit the ice so we see them at their best. It is a lot to ask of these kids in the middle of their summer to make sure they are physically and mentally ready to perform come camp time but it will be a test of their commitment needed to play in the competitive environment known as Major Bantam Hockey.

Camp gets under way August 15th in Kentville
