Hurricanes Pick up Four Points in Weekend Play

On Saturday, your BMO Western Hurricanes started slowly with a choppy first period against the Bearcats.  10 minutes in minor penalties, including a rare 'ineligible player' call for an equipment issue, meant that the Hurricanes were on their back foot for a good part of the period, which ended in a 1-1 tie.  In the second, it was the Bearcats turn to run into penalty trouble with 12 minutes in minor penalties, and the Hurricanes turned up the heat on the power play.  Despite that, they went to the dressing room at the end of the second with only a slim 2-1 lead.  Bronsen Benight got the third started off well, however, with a goal three minutes in, from Cooke and Shatford.  From there, the Hurricanes really settled down and took control of the game.   Jordan Messenger, Morgan Messenger, Keegan Cooke and Bronsen Benight (his second) all tallied third period markers in leading to a dominating 7-1 win.  Cory Peterson only allowed the single first period goal and turned aside the rest of the shots.  Josh Shatford contributed 4 assists.

On Sunday, a determined Bearcats team weathered a quick start by the Hurricanes to get two late 1st period goals and take a 2-1 lead after one.  The Hurricanes went down another goal with only 4 minutes left in the second, before battling back with two power play markers from Morgan Messenger and Bronsen Benight, less than two minutes apart before the period ended.  End of two, all even at 3-3.  Again, the Bearcats made it tough, with Pugsley notching two to put the Hurricanes down 5-3 with 13 minutes to go in the final frame.  Alex Nauss (from J. Messenger) brought us back within one.   It was then the line of M. Messenger, Benight and Shatford that took control, scoring three goals over a five minute stretch to go up by two.  The Bearcats did not roll over however, popping one more with 4:19 to go.  Certainly made the last few minutes interesting, but even with a pulled goalie and a late penalty to the Hurricanes, the home team was able to finish out for a hard fought 7-6 win.    Morgan Messenger picked up the hat-trick, Alex Mann got a goal and three assists and Josh Shatford picked up another three assists.  The power play was firing with 5 goals on 9 opportunities.  Great character shown as your Hurricanes came back twice from two goal deficits!
