Cougars Split on Weekend

Joneljim Coigars played host to Newbridge Senators Saturday evening at Emera Centre Northside.   Senators showed no signs of travel fatigue as they got an early jump on the scoreboard.   First Bailey Peach scored 40 seconds in, and then Damian Hartt tallied less then 45 seconds later.  Despite finding themselvesdown early, Cougars would find their stride and outshoot Senators rest of the period, but had no luck finding the back of the net.  2-0 after 1 period.  With the hometeam on the PP early in the 2nd, our 3 veteran players would connect and cut the lead in half.  Ashton Paul scored from Leon Denny and Jarrett Baker.  However Peach and Hartt would each snipe again for the Sens, giving them a 4-1 lead with 20 to play.   Early in the 3rd, Peach would complete his hattrick, and Kenzie Mackinnon would reply for the Cougars, Kinnon Williams assisting.  Final score 5-2 in favor of the Newbridge club.  Seth Crowe made 31 stops for the Joneljim Group, and Tristan Colley made 26 saves for the win.

On Sunday the Cougars made Dan K Stevens Arena in Eskasoni their home rink for the day, as the Scotsburn Crushers from Pictou rolled into town.  Baker would snipe first, tearing down the left side and burying a rocket past the Crusher goalie, Baker would score again 4 minutes later from MacKinnon for a 2 goal lead.  Mason Hawley would get the Crushers on the board late in period 1 to cut the lead to 1 goal.  In the 2nd, Williams would catch fire and score 3 goals in row, with Paul assisting on all 3, Denny also had a helper.  The score was 5-1 entering the last period.  Only 1 goal was in the 3rd, Williams with his 4th, from Paul with his 4th assist of the day.  Final score 6-1 Cougars.  Owen MacPhee made 14 timely saves for the win, while Mitchell Cummer had 28 saves for the Pictou team.
