Cougars Sweep Metro Road Trip
Breton Sport & Trophy Cougars faced off versus Halifax Accel Hawks on Saturday night at the Civic Centre. Connor Campbell opened the scoring for the Cougars on the PP after a mad scramble in front of Hawks goalie Matthew Welsh. Chase Fraser and Colton Marchand picked up assists. Matthew Steinburg got the Hawks on the board on a goal from Samuel Beaton. Score was 1-1 after one period. Cougars found the back of the net behind Welsh twice early in the second frame. First Derek Gentile scored from Cameron Yates and Marchand, and then Logan Struthers scored on the PP from Leon Denny. Both Welsh and Cougar tender Cody Smith settled in a groove after that, the score was 3-1 for the Cougars after 2. Ben MacDonald got the Hawks to within 1 with the man advantage, Christian Huntley and Beaton getting the helpers. Smith shut the door on the Hawks the rest of the way, and Gentile added an empty netter for a 4-2 win Smith made 21 stops for the win, while Welsh made 32 saves.
On Sunday AM, the Cougars played the league leading Barons at BMO Centre in Bedford. Goalies Kaine Drake of the Cougars and Brendan Hirtle of the Barons stole the show early leading to a scoreless draw after 1. Logan O'Neil scored twice in the second, first from Struthers and Gentile on the PP, and then from Gentile and Chad O'Neill to stake the visiitors a 2 goal lead. Barons answered quickly, AJ Allain scored from Kynan Berger to cut the leadin half. Marchand scored what turned out to be the game winner late in the 2nd finishing a beauty passing play from O'Neil and Gentile. Drake stopped Allain on a penalty shot late to hold the Cougars 2 goal lead going into period 3. Berger cut the lead to within 1 on the PP from Allain and Kennan MacIssiac. Dylan Pimentel tipped a shot from Stuthers on the PP to regain the Cougars 2 goal lead, and Leon Denny would score into the empty net to seal the deal for the Cougars. Final score 5-2 Cougars. Drake was solid kicking aside 26 shots vs the Barons, while Hirtle shouldered the loss making 19 saves.
Cougars play at home, Emera Centre Northside, the next 2 weeks. Versuse the Dartmouth Whalers on Dec 14 and 15th, and play host to Kings Mutual Valley Wildcats on Dec. 21st and 22nd.
