HRM Arena Policy for Zatzman Sportsplex

Zatzman Sportsplex COVID-19 Arena Spectator Guidelines Effective October 1, 2020, arenas across HRM will allow spectators in their facilities provided the specified guidelines are followed. Below is a list of these guidelines, along with the specific processes and procedures pertaining to the Zatzman Sportsplex. One spectator per participant up to a maximum of 50 spectators, will be permitted in the arena.Spectator COVID-19 forms, contact tracing, monitoring, and compliance will be the sole responsibility of the renter. The Zatzman Sportsplex will require a minimum of 48 hours written notice if the renter will be hosting spectators, as well as the name and contact information for each volunteer that will be responsible for their spectators. There is no requirement to have spectators. You can also choose to have spectators for games but not for practices or vice versa. All spectators will be required to complete a COVID—19 pre-screening and to provide contact tracing information to a representative of the ice renter prior to proceeding to the viewing area. Each rental group that is allowing spectators is required to provide a volunteer that is responsible for the COVID-19 pre-screening, forms, contact tracing, spectator limit, and monitoring of spectators during the rental. A standard COVID-19 pre-screening form will be emailed to each rental group. The Zatzman Sportsplex will not provide printed copies of this form. Groups will be responsible for administering and collecting these forms and record keeping. Processes for collecting forms and information will be at the discretion of the renter, however, forms must be completed on the day that the spectator is attending. Forms must be kept for a minimum of 30 days. Spectators will be permitted to enter the arena 5 minutes prior to the scheduled ice time. There is a separate spectator entrance for the Zatzman Sportsplex arena. It is located to the right of the main entrance, in the corner next to the black bike/storage lockers. Each rental group will be required to have their volunteer arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of the rental (through the main entrance). The volunteer will then go to the designated area to set-up to let spectators in no sooner than 5 minutes prior to the start of the rental. We suggest that the volunteer remain at the spectator entrance until at least 10 minutes after the start of the rental. At that time, the door will be closed and any spectators wishing to come in after that would have to contact the volunteer to be let in through the spectator entrance. If at any point a spectator leaves the facility and wants to return, the volunteer is responsible for letting the spectator back into the building and ensuring all COVID-19 protocols were followed. Spectators must wear a mask and physically distance at all times. Spectators from the same family are permitted to sit together if there are no more than 10 in the group without social distancing. Designated viewing areas are sections 3–11. Spectators will not be permitted anywhere in the facility except to walk to the viewing area. All spectators must go directly to an available seat between sections 3–11. There will be no building access to the Zatzman Sportsplex. Washrooms are in the arena behind section 6. Spectators are not permitted to use the track at any time. Anyone wishing to use the track must book a time through HRM MyRec. Spectators are not permitted in dressing rooms or dressing room hallway. Please refer the COVID-19 Arena Rental Guidelines for details on participants under 12. Anyone accompanying a participant 12 or under to assist them with their gear will be required to exit the facility and enter again through the spectator entrance. Spectators must exit the arena as soon as the scheduled ice time ends, and the next group of spectators will not be permitted to enter the facility until the spectator area is completely vacant. There is a designated exit door for spectators located behind sections 3 and 4. Spectators are not permitted to use any other doors for exiting other than in the case of an emergency. No food or drink will be permitted for spectators. This is to ensure spectators are always wearing their mask. Each ice renter will be required to have an individual assigned to ensure these guidelines are followed for the duration of the rental. In the place of a volunteer, a security company may be used to monitor spectators on behalf of the rental group. The cost of the security is the sole responsibility of the rental group. Renters that do not enforce the spectator guidelines may lose their privilege to have spectators and/or lose their ice time. If you have any questions, require more information, or would like a tour of arena to better understand these guidelines, please contact Tara Myra, Facility Rentals and Events Coordinator at myrat@halifax.ca.

Dartmouth MHA Whalers announce new head coach

We are pleased to announce the coaching staff for this coming season. Ryan Boucher - Head Coach: Ryan grew up playing hockey in Cole Harbour until Peewee.  Being from a military family, he moved around to a few cities across Canada and the U.S. to continue to play hockey at the AAA level until last day of minor hockey.  After his hockey career, Ryan began coaching for 2 years at Auburn High school.  2 years after that he was picked up half way through a season with the Shannon Huskies junior C hockey club.  Ryan then landed a head coach job with the Dartmouth Whalers Bantam A team. The following year was with Dartmouth's Bantam AA team, also as a head coach.  Ryan looks forward to the challenge of coaching and developing the players at the Major Bantam level. Bobby Sacre - Assistant Coach: Bobby grew up playing his minor hockey in the Dartmouth Whalers minor hockey organization and was involved in the HNS High Performance Program. After his minor hockey was over he played three years for Prince Andrew High School before moving on to the NSJHL. After his competitive playing years, Bobby accepted an Assistant Coaching position with the Shannon Huskies expansion in the NSJRCHL. Last year Bobby was involved in coaching back in the Whalers organization at the Bantam AA level. Bobby is extremely excited about the upcoming season and taking on the new challenge of coaching at the Major Bantam level. Tyson Aalders - Assistant Coach: Tyson grew up playing minor hockey in the Dartmouth Whalers organization before moving on to play two years with the Cole Harbour McCains Major Midget program. Upon completing his second year with the McCains, Tyson was selected in the third round of the Maritime Jr.A Hockey League by the Amherst Ramblers. After 5 years of junior hockey spread throughout the MJAHL and NSJHL, Tyson took his passion and knowledge for the game behind the bench. Tyson has spent time serving as head coach with the Shannon Jr.C Huskies and also with the Cole Harbour Colts of the NSJHL. He has also spent time as team lead at the Under 15 level with Hockey Nova Scotia's High Performance Program. Coming into his first season with the Major Bantam Whalers, he is excited to give back to the organization where he grew up playing and sparked his passion for the game of hockey.

MHA Whalers Regular Season Champs

February 21st marked a special day in the history of the Dartmouth major bantam franchise. After our final regular season game today the MHA Major Bantam Whalers were officially named the NSMBHL Regular Season Champions for the 2014-2015 season.  Enroute to winning the championship this year the team set a new league record for win/loss ending the regular season with a record of 31-2-0. Setting a new win loss record was not an identified goal this season, but it comes as a result of commitment and hard work from our players, coaches, trainers, goalie coach and a very significant commitment from the player's families. As host team for the 2015 Irving Oil Challenge Cup in April, the MHA Whalers set the goal at the start of the season to win their way into this atlantic championship tournament. The team motto has been "through the front door" all season long.  Taking one game at a time the team has steadly moved toward their ultimate season goal; today was one more step toward that goal of getting to the IOCC `through the front door`. Next weekend NSMBHL playoffs start and the team will be back working toward getting to the 2015 IOCC, through the front door. Mark April 9th on your calendar, as the MHA Whalers will host Team NS on the opening day of the 2015 Irving Oil Challenge Cup at the Dartmouth Sportsplex in what is sure to be a very exciting game!

Week 10 ... Whalers earn a split in return to NSMBHL play

Week 9 was a sucessful weekend in Saint John where the MHA Whalers earned a silver medal in the KV Vito's Bantam AAA Tournament, after falling to Bedford 5-1 in the gold medal game. In the resumption of regular season play in Week 10 the MHA Whalers earned a split, picking up 2 points on Saturday in a vist to Kings Mutual in Berwick.  With the line of Blackmore-McDonald - McLeod - Hector leading the way with 2 goals in the game, the line of MacQueen - Henman and King were able to seal the win with what turned out to be the game winning goal at 17:15 of the third period, in what was a 3-2 win. Sunday the MHA Whalers resumed their competition with the Bedford Barrons at the BMO Centre.  Lessons were learned from the gold medal loss to Bedford one week earlier.  While the win over Bedford still eluded the MHA Whalers, a 2-1 loss with only one penalty to Dartmouth can be considered a successful step in the competitive evolution of our team.

Whalers season concludes in Cape Breton

Saturday evening in North Sydney fans were treated to an intense, exciting playoff game where all the chips were on the line.  For the Whalers, it was a "must win" to extend their playoff series to a final game 3. For the Breton Sports Cougars it was a chance to wrap things up and head to Provincials. Armed with a game plan to shut down Cape Breton's potent offense and play 5 on 5 hockey as much as possible the Major Bantam Whalers embarked on what would be one of the most exciting, intense games of the season.  The first period ended in a 0-0 tie with the Whalers taking only one minor penalty the game plan laid out by the coaching staff was being executed by the players to perfection. The second period saw the Whalers jump out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Quinn MacDonald (assists to Ben MacQueen and Michael Smith) and Andrew Martell (assists to Patrick Halpin and Zakk McKenna), and players headed off to the dressing room with a lead over Breton Sports Cougars for the first time this season. The third period saw the Breton Sports Cougars outshoot the Whalers 10-5, and ultimately get three pucks past Reid Beck, and at 17:32 of the 3rd take the lead for the first time of the evening.  The game ended 3-2, with the Breton Sports Cougars advancing to Provincials.  It was a fantastic effort by the Major Bantam Whalers, who demonstrated a character team will always have an opportunity to win, no matter who the opposition is. The Major Bantam Whalers would like to thank their parents, sponsors and fans for all your support this season.
